La Grande after a long battle with an illness. A memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. Nov. 5 at Christian Life Center, 1391 Alder St. in Elgin. A life celebration will be held in Idaho on Nov. 19. For more information, call Judy at 541-805-4395. Loveland Funeral Chapel of La Grande is assisting with the arrangements. She was born May 29, 1963, to Judith Hickman and Douglas Evertson at Redmond. She was the eldest of four children. While living in Council, Idaho, she met Gary Draper, the love of her life. They married Aug. 17, 1991. They first moved to Emmett, Idaho, and finally settled in Elgin. Those who knew her say she was a “tenacious, intelligent, vibrant and very eccentric soul who was loved by all who knew her.” She is survived by her husband, Gary; brothers, Jess and Jake; sister, Jody; son, Levi (Dana); daughters, Judy (Carl) and Aubrey (Isiah); and her granddaughter and grandson. Rebecca requested that donations be made to the local animal shelter or any other charity.
Elgin 1986-2011 Spencer Blaine Matte, 24, of Elgin, died Oct. 22 in La Grande. A celebration of life service will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday at Rockwall Grange hall outside of Elgin on Middle Road. A potluck will follow. Spencer was born on Nov. 13, 1986, son of Spencer James and Gina (Like) Matte in Enumclaw, Wash. Spencer later moved to Elgin with family where he attended Elgin schools. He worked as a laborer in the timber industry. He enjoyed playing basketball, spending time with family and friends, listening to music, reading the Bible and art. Survivors include his mother, Gina Matte of Elgin; father, Spencer Matte of Kingston, Wash.; brothers, Jeremy Matte of La Grande and Joshua Matte of Elgin; grandfather, Robert Like of Elgin; and many aunts and uncles. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to an account set up at U.S. Bank or in care of Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, 1502 Seventh St. in La Grande.
Formerly of Pondosa 1922-2011
He was born Sept. 17, 1922, at Emmett, Idaho, the son of Martin and Nancy Webb Smith. He was raised on the family farm at Emmett the youngest of nine children. In 1940 he moved to Pondosa where he met Lenna Wells. On Oct. 3, 1942, the couple married at Emmett. Glenn enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942. He served aboard a naval ship in the Pacific theater. He received an honorable discharge in 1945, and then returned to Pondosa to work in the lumber industry. He worked for lumber companies most of his life and retired from Kinzua Corp. in 1985 as head sawyer. Following his retirement, he and Lenna fulfilled their life-long goal of traveling the world. Glenn loved gardening and hunting and fishing with family and friends. He was a life-long member of the Heppner B.P.O.E. No. 358, the United Methodist Church, American Legion and U.S. Naval Reserves. Survivors include his wife, Lenna Smith of Bend; daughter, Judy Knight and her husband, Gordon, of Bend; son, Michael Smith of Bend; brother, Ernie Smith of La Grande; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters. Memorial contributions may be made to local hospice organizations.
