She loved crafts, collecting Christmas ornaments, and most of all, her family and pets. She was also co-owner of Sherman Land and Cattle Co. of La Grande, and City Wide Transportation Co. of Hawaii.

She is survived by her husband, Harvey; two sons, Jeffrey Sherman of La Grande and Michael Sherman of Hawaii; brother, Phillip and his wife, Marsha Feldman, of Bakersfield, Calif., and Betty and her husband, Michael Sherman, of Crestline, Calif.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Gertrude Helen Titus, 97, of Union, died Oct. 24 at a local care center. A celebration of life will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Union Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Union Cemetery. Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center is in charge of arrangements.

Gertrude was born Nov. 13, 1911, to Conrad John and Marie Margaret (Horch) Schuetz in Odessa, Wash. She was one of 10 children and helped with her siblings growing up in Ritzville, Wash., and then Rathdrum, Idaho, where she graduated from high school.

On March 28, 1936, she married Marvin W. Titus in La Grande. They lived at Haines and on a ranch near Telocaset before moving to Union in 1940.

Over the years she worked at almost every business in Union, the drug store, Union Hotel, hardware store, Ben Franklin and even baked pies for the Knotty Pine cafe. She was the fire chief’s wife for 32 years and was always helping around the fire station. The couple was involved in the community but Gertrude also gave much time to the schools with PTA and being room mother many times. The Union High School Class of 1960 elected Marvin and Gertrude Citizens of the Year.

She was a member of the Union Methodist Church, Rebekkah Lodge and the Junior Women’s Club. She was a seamstress for both the women and the men of Union for many years. She enjoyed cooking and loved to crochet. Her potholders can be found all over the world as she was very generous with sharing them.

Survivors include her children, Norman and Carol Titus of Lihue, Hawaii, Ron and Dorothy Titus of Union, Richard Titus of Salem, Willora George and Susan Hinzpeter of Baker City and Cinda and Pete Petersen of Union; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sister, Martha Post of Coeur‘d Alene, Idaho; sister-in-law, Carolyn Schuetz of Canby; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1991; daughter-in-law, Jill Titus; four brothers; and four sisters.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Bradley Angle House, Bobcat Foundation, Union Fire Department, Breast Cancer Research or any charity in care of Daniels-Knopp.
