Obituaries for the day of September 14, 2009

Aschenbrenner, Fisk, Laurence, Gorrell, Gunn, Kinnick

 

Edna Aschenbrenner, 89, of Enterprise, died Sept. 7. A service will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday at Enterprise Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Enterprise City Library.

Howard Fisk, 93, of La Grande, died Sept. 9 at a local care center. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday at Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, 1502 Seventh St. in La Grande. A full obituary will be available later.


Raema Laurence, 85, of La Grande, died Sept. 12 at a local care center. Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center is in charge of arrangements.


M. Keith Gorrell, 74, of La Grande, died Sept. 13 at his home. Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center is in charge of arrangements.


Malvina Blanche Gunn, 92, formerly of Imbler, died Sept. 11 at home of Parkinson’s Disease. A graveside service will begin at noon Wednesday at the Summerville Cemetery. Fir Lawn Memorial Center in Hillsboro is in charge of arrangements.

Malvina was born May 2, 1917, to Leonard and Belle Billings in Imbler. She married William E. Gunn June 17, 1961. The marriage was solemnized later in Idaho Falls Temple.

Malvina was an elementary school teacher. She retired in 1980 from Portland public schools. She received her master’s degree from Eastern Oregon. She coached basketball and volleyball at Imbler before going to Portland.

She enjoyed gardening, playing golf, music and people. She loved knowing people in the Grande Ronde Valley and loved the Blazers pro basketball team.

She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served in many capacities with the youth of the church.

She is survived by her husband, William, and many nieces and nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her son, William Leonard Lively; stepdaughter, Carol K. Larrance of Svenson; sisters, Wilma Rhoades of Clinton, Utah, Gladys Anderson of La Grande and an infant sister, Leah Billings.


Jeanie Kinnick, 57, of La Grande, died Sept. 7, at Grande Ronde Hospital from complications of her long-time battle with a chronic illness. Loveland Funeral Chapel & Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

Jeanie was born May 15, 1952, to Ted and Helen (Garretson) Nugent in Eugene. She graduated from Imbler High School in 1970 and raised her family in La Grande.

Those who knew Jeanie say she lived every day to help all animals and loved her own very much.

She is survived by her husband of 39 years, John, who stood by her side, loved and supported her, without fail, through her 37-year battle with Crohn’s Disease. She is also survived by her children, Heidi, and her husband, Ron Engelson, and Jennifer Lindsey, all of Pendleton; five grandchildren, all of Pendleton; sister and brother in-law, Pat and Bill Bartlett; brother and sister-in-law, Terry and Mardel Nugent; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Kate and Ron Ledbetter; and sister-in-law, Shelly Kinnick; six nieces; eight nephews; and several great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

She was preceded in death by her parents; nephew, Terry Jr.; brother-in-law, Walt; and her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Fred and Jackie Kinnick.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society or the ASPCA.
