LOCAL FUNERALS AND VISITATIONS

Sept. 26 — Betty Shaffer, memorial service, 2 p.m., IOOF Hall, Summerville

Everett Lee Leach, 73, of Lostine, died Sept. 13 at his home at the Lostine River Ranch. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the Lostine River Ranch. A potluck will follow. Bollman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Cathy Sult, 57, of North Powder, died Sept. 17. Details for a gathering at her home in North Powder will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations for expenses may be sent to Loveland Funeral Home.

Wm. M. “Bill” Dougherty, 88, of Wallowa, died Aug. 13 surrounded by his family. A private family celebration of life was held Sept. 19 at Bramlet Cemetery in Wallowa. Bollman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Bill was born Oct. 7, 1920, to Hugh and Margaret Dougherty in Wallowa. He was raised on the family farm in Lower Valley and was the eldest of two sons. He attended Wallowa Grade School and graduated from Wallowa High School in 1938.

Bill married his high school sweetheart, Marie Tubbin, on Nov. 21, 1939. They eloped to Weiser, Idaho, and were married in the Presbyterian Church. They had four children, Janice, William “Bill,” Sharon and Douglas.

Bill served in World War II from 1944-1946 with honorable discharge on Jan. 21, 1946. He received the Asiatic Pacific service medal, the Phillipine Liberation service medal with one bronze service star, the Good Conduct medal and the Victory medal.

When Bill returned home from the war, he went to work at J. Herbert Bates Mill and for Pete Holleran Logging. In 1955, he went into partnership with George Pearson and started a logging business, Pearson and Dougherty. One year later, Bill bought Pearson out and a new company was formed, Wm. M. Dougherty Logging, Inc. until it was dissolved in 1995.

He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, Elks Lodge and Masonic Lodge. He was always generous to help out with special projects in the community with his time and logging equipment and also made charitable donations.

He loved traveling, fishing and most of all time with his family and friends. He loved to entertain at the senior citizens’ dinners on his organ along with his lifetime musical friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marie, in 1999 after 60 years of marriage; his parents; and his brother, Robert “Bob” H. Dougherty.

He is survived by his daughter, Janice and her husband, A.J. Burns, of Adams; son, William “Bill” and his wife, Alice Dougherty of Red Bluff, Calif.; daughter, Sharon and her husband, James Cleveland, of Ridgefield, Wash.; son, Douglas and his wife, Kathy Dougherty, of Wallowa; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
