Kathryn A. McFarland

La Grande

1921-2009

Kathryn Ann McFarland, 88, of La Grande, died Aug. 27 at a local care center. A graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the Wallowa Cemetery. Viewing will run from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, 1502 Seventh St. in

La Grande.

Kathryn was born Feb. 16, 1921, to Dr. John B. and Margaret (Boner) Gregory in Wallowa. When she was 11 her mother died, but she spoke often of memories of canoeing with her on Wallowa Lake. Her father moved to Hot Lake with her after the death of her mother. She graduated from

La Grande High School and later married Ray McFarland. They had six children and owned and operated McFarland Logging. They divorced after 25 years of marriage.

Some of the happiest memories she had were of times spent at their cabin on Mount Emily, sharing her knowledge of nature and wildlife. She loved flying, hunting and picking mushrooms and wildflowers. She was an avid reader and loved to swim at the Cove Pool with her kids and grandkids. She also enjoyed being outdoors, horseback riding and spending time at Wallowa Lake. She loved all of the holidays.

Kathryn was involved in PTA, was past president of the Good Neighbor Club and was involved with the Girl Scouts for more than 20 years, from Brownies to Seniors. Many years of day camps at Birdtrack Springs and Spring Creek will be remembered by many who knew her. She was very active with the Indian Festival of Arts in La Grande

Survivors include her children, Ann Cray of La Grande, Richard McFarland of Union, Marilyn McFarland and her significant other, Bob Peterson, of Union, Mark and his wife, Gayle McFarland, of Cottage Grove, John McFarland of McMinnville and Janine McFarland of Crooked River Ranch; brother and his wife, Jack and Verla Gregory of

La Grande; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Girl Scouts of America, Silver Sage Council or to the Hot Lake Project in care of Daniels-Knopp.
