Obituaries for the week ending July 29, 2006

John Logan Cobb, 71, who taught voice and conducted choirs at Eastern Oregon University for 30 years, died July 4 in Portland from complications due to pneumonia. A celebration of life in music and words will begin at 2 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Portland First United Methodist Church. Everyone is welcome.

Dr. Cobb was born Sept. 25, 1934, to John Lewis and Marguerite Weber Cobb in Rochester, N.Y. He earned a bachelor's degree in music education at Illinois Wesleyan University, a master's at Indiana University and a doctorate at the University of Oregon. He taught music in Illinois public schools before moving to La Grande in 1960 to teach and conduct at Eastern Oregon College.

For the next 30 years, he taught voice, developed and conducted choral programs at the college and in the community, adjudicated regional and state music events and performed as a tenor soloist.

He sang in the Oregon Bach Festival Chorus, was a founding member of the Male Ensemble Northwest and conducted and sang in several church choirs.

He retired in 1991 and moved to the Portland area. He continued solo work, adjudicating occasionally and was a member of the choir at Portland First United Methodist Church.

In October 2004 he was a guest conductor at the Eastern Oregon University 75th Celebration Concert. He enjoyed playing golf, reading and traveling.

Survivors include his wife, Betty; children, Laura C. Stewart, Katherine Carter and John P. Cobb; five grandchildren; and two sisters, Jean LaCamera of Hamden, Conn., and Marguerite Loy of New Port Richey, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a fund for the restoration of the music room at Hot Lake Springs Resort in his honor. Checks may be sent to John Cobb Music Room Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 220285, Milwaukie 97269.

Patricia Eileen Henry, 56, of John Day, died July 26 at her home. The funeral will begin at 10 a.m. Friday July 28 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in John Day with Bishop Gary Delaney officiating. Burial will be at the Elgin Cemetery.

Mrs. Henry was born Oct. 14, 1949, to Ralph Richard and Thelma Jane Miller in Nampa, Idaho. She graduated from Valivue High School in Nampa, and married Ken Henry on March 27, 1970, in Logan, Utah. She worked in the Grant County 4-H office as an assistant.

She was a member of the Church of the LDS Church, and served in various callings, including teaching seminary. She was an accomplished pianist and organist, and she enjoyed knitting booties for the newborns at Blue Mountain Hospital, gardening, photography and baking.

Survivors include her husband of John Day; children and their spouses, Kristal and Chris Peck of Highland, Utah, Duane and Joan Henry of John Day, Kevin and Lisa Henry of Lehi, Utah; Ami and Fernando Silva of Springville, Utah, and Heidi and Loren Mullin of Las Vegas, Nev.; her parents of Nampa, and 15 grandchildren.

Gertrude Butterfield died at her daughter's home in Caldwell, Idaho, on July 28.

The viewing will be from 8 to 10 a.m. Monday at Loveland Funeral Chapel, followed by a graveside service at the Cove Cemetery at 11.

Gertrude was born in Cove on Aug. 21, 1915, to Ernest Houx Bell and Irene Seaberg Bell. She was raised in Cove and graduated from Cove High School. As a teenager she raised registered champion Jersey cows, taking the grand champion trophy at the Oregon State Fair two years in a row.

She married George Butterfield in 1936 and had four children. Gertrude worked as a secretary in La Grande for 33 years. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, needlework and providing for her family.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Gary and Marianne Butterfield of Caldwell, Gay and Duane Wilson of Boise, Gail and Norman Reitz of Hayward, Calif., and Gina and Bobby Lasher of Caldwell, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
