Obituaries for the week ending June 17, 2006

Ernest Edgar Adams, 93, of Elgin died June 9 at a local care center. The funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Elgin Christian Church. Burial will follow at the Elgin Cemetery.

Mr. Adams was born April 12, 1913, to John William and Emily Jane Law Adams in Elgin. He graduated from Elgin High School and attended Eastern Oregon Normal School for a year. He worked for the box factory when he was young and played on a minor league baseball team.

On Nov. 11, 1933, he married Frances Elizabeth Gilkison in Union. During World War II they lived in Portland and he was part owner of a Tacoma lumber mill. They returned to Elgin where he worked as a carpenter, plumber and electrician. He built many homes and businesses in Union County.

He owned Adams Supply in Elgin for many years. When he moved locations he renamed the business Ern's Plumbing and Heating. After the death of his wife he married Laurose Hibberd on April 30, 2005.

He was a member and past president of the Elgin Stampeders, a charter member of the Indian Valley Good Sam Club, a member of the Elgin Masonic Lodge, the Elgin Lions Club and the Elgin Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, being with children, and taking winter trips to Mexico.

Survivors include his wife of Elgin; daughters, Farrell Maxwell of Haines, Betty Lou Martin of Elgin and Terry Adams-High of Portland; step-daughters, Mary West and Carrie Bingaman, both of Imbler; a brother, Ken Adams of Elgin; a sister, Millie Lind of Kennewick; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and other relatives. An infant son, Errol, and siblings, Ruth Puckett, George Adams, John Richard Adams, Lucy Shear, Arthur Adams and Laura Roulet, all died earlier.

Memorials may be made to the Shriners' Hospital for Children or the Elgin Stampeders in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Alfred M. "Jack'' Hays, 84, of Walla Walla and formerly of Enterprise died June 10. A graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. Friday June 16 at the Enterprise Cemetery. Herring Groseclose and Bollman funeral homes are in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hays was born Aug. 6, 1921,to Omar H. and Anna L. Hays n Enterprise. He attended and Enterprise schools, and served in the Army during World War II. He married Jean Ratcliff in Enterprise, where they lived until 1964. He worked for Pacific Power and Light for 33 years in Enterprise and Walla Walla, until 1983. After retirement, the couple enjoyed traveling. They lived in Yuma, Ariz., in the winter.

He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Elks, and enjoyed fishing, hunting and golf. He prided himself in still walking the many golf courses where he played.

Survivors include his wife of Walla Walla; children and their spouses, Tom and Victoria Hays of Vancouver, Wash., Tony Hays of Juneau, Alaska, and Jackie and Bob Schneider of Spokane; two grandchildren; two sisters Marge McBride and Freida Hansen; and three brothers, Buck, Bill and Frank Hays. Two more brothers, J.D. and Ron, died earlier.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary Cancer Center in Walla Walla.

Ardeth Emma Moberly Riggs, 83, of Summerville, died June 12 at a local care center. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday June 17 at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St.

Mrs. Riggs was born April 15, 1923, to William Homer and Eva Marie Gault Sink in Northgate, N.D. She moved to Yakima and married Harold Moberly on Dec. 13, 1946. While in Yakima her job was packing apples.

The couple moved to Springfield in 1950 where she worked as a pre-school teacher for a time before going to work for the Lane County Educational Services District. She was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Yakima and Springfield.

After the death of her husband, she married Hugh Riggs on July 10, 1977, at Camp Myrtlewood in Myrtle Point. They moved to La Grande in 1995. She was an avid gardener and loved flowers. She enjoyed crafts, crocheting, camping, traveling and visiting with and teasing her family.

Survivors include her daughters and their husbands, Pat and Dave Rainey of Summerville and Mary and Ed Rainey of Gresham; a step-daughter, Donna McMahon of Hillsboro; brothers, Kenneth Sink of Pomona, Calif., and Harold Sink of Lodi, Calif.; sisters, Edna Sharp of Yakima and Elsie Ihmels of Colorado Springs, Colo; three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; and other relatives. Her husband and eight brothers and sisters died earlier.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley.
