Obituaries for the week ending June 18, 2005

Don Woodrow McCall, 88, of La Grande died June 11. A celebration of life will begin at 1 p.m. Friday June 17 at the First Christian Church, 901 Penn Ave.

Mr. McCall was born Jan. 3, 1917, to E.J. and Lillie Gilberts McCall in Garretson, S.D. He graduated from high school in Silverton in 1935, and on Dec. 24, 1940, he married Frances E. Robbins. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad from 1941 to 1968, and for Glass Drug Store until his retirement. He was a member of the First Christian Church, the La Grande Elks and the Pendleton Odd Fellows. He enjoyed both playing and watching sports. He played football and pursued gymnastics and diving. He was a Golden Gloves boxer and late in life took up golf. He was club champion in 1973 at the La Grande Country Club. He enjoyed woodworking and for 20 years made Christmas ornaments for his niece's kindergarten classes.

Survivors include his wife of La Grande; a daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Larry Sparks of Vantage, Wash.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Mary Box of Moiese, Mont., and other relatives. Three brothers, Floyd, Rodney and Les McCall, and a sister, Fern DeReu, all died earlier.

Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or any charity in care of Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St.

Porter Alex "Tim" Payne, 84,of Prineville and formerly of La Grande died June 11 at a care center. At his request there will be no service.

Mr. Payne was born March 29, 1921, to James S. and Lillian P. Hall Payne in Troy. He attended school in La Grande, and served in the Army during World War II in the Philippines. In 1949 he married Irene Looker in Baker City. He farmed, raised cattle and worked for Eastern Oregon College in maintenance and then for the Oregon Department of Transportation in highway maintenance before his retirement in 1983. He moved to Prineville in 2004 from North Powder.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the National Rifle Association, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Alex G. Payne of Glendale, Calif., and Emma "Lucy" and Charles Thompson of Prineville; one grandchild; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Aaron Payne of Union and James Payne of Salem; two sisters, Emma Hoyt of Union and Peggy Garrison of Salem; and other relatives. A sister, Wanneta Wilson, died earlier.

Memorials may be made to the NRA or to Pioneer Memorial Hospice in care of Prineville Funeral Home, 199 N.E. 10th St., Prineville 97754.

Jeannette Johnson, 89, of La Grande died June 11 at a local care center. At her request there will be no public service.

Mrs. Johnson was born Feb. 3, 1916, in Springfield. In 1948 she married William Lewis Johnson in the San Francisco Bay area. They lived in Orange County. After his death in 1990 she moved to La Grande to be near family. She enjoyed reading and being with her family.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Colleen Johnson of La Grande; two grandchildren and other relatives. A son, Michael Johnson, and three sisters died earlier.

Alexis Sue Alta Marie Giese, 3, of La Grande died June 13 of accidental drowning while swimming at the La Grande Veterans' Memorial Pool.

Viewing will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Loveland Funeral Chapel. A celebration of life will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at Summerville Baptist Church.

Alexis was born July 19, 2001, to Kimberly Petersen and Shane Darrel Giese in La Grande. She had a passion for buying shoes, shopping and playing in water. She enjoyed fishing and camping and playing with her ferret, Abbie. She didn't know a stranger and brightened many lives with her smile and loving personality.

Survivors include her mother and step-father, Kim and Mike Hanson of La Grande; father; siblings, Kadence and Kaleb Giese, Brody Hanson and Brittany and Tristan Hanson; her grandparents, Bruce and Sue Petersen and Chris and Dave Giese; great-grandparents, Bill and Helen Volle of Elgin and Ken and Sylvia Rogers; aunts and uncles, Kaycee and Angelo St. Claire of Gresham, Cody Petersen of La Grande, Rachel Victory, and Shawn D. Giese; and other relatives.

Contributions may be made to a memorial fund at the La Grande branch of US Bank, or in care of Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St.
