Obituaries for the week ending May 4, 2006

Meade Blackburn Ballard, 84, of Union died Dec. 16, 2005. a memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday May 6 at the Union Cemetery.

Mr. Ballard was born Feb. 14, 1921, to andrew Meade an Daisy DeForest Sims Ballard on Little Sheep Creek in Wallowa county. He graduated from Union High School in 1939, and on aug. 21, 1940, he married Darlene H. Pratt in Wieser, Idaho. He served in the Navy during World War II and worked for the Forest Service, as a logger, in sawmills, as a farmer and for the Union Pacific Railroad. He retired in 1983.

He was a member of the High Valley Post of the VFW and enjoyed working around the house, gardening, flowers, cutting and splitting wood and being with his family.

Survivors include his wife of Baker city; children nd their spouses, Dixie and Carl Komperda of Milton, Fla., Connie and Jeff Peck of Sparks, Nev., DeForest "Tork" and Wanda Ballard of Baker City, and Sue Fuzi of Payette, Idaho; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. A half-sister, Eva, and a daughter, Louann Davis, both died earlier.

Memorials may be made to the High Valley VFW or the Bobcat Foundation, P.O. Box 91, Union 97883.

L. George Chadwick, 90, of Union, died May 1 at his home. Viewing will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St.

A memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at the Union Baptist Church. A private family burial was at the Cove Cemetery.

Mr. Chadwick was born Jan. 16, 1916, to Lynn and Georgeanna Miller Chadwick in Cove. He attended Shanghai School, graduated from Cove High School and attended Eastern Oregon Normal School.

On July 3, 1938, he married Leora Titus in Cove.

The couple rode for the Cove Cattlemen's Association for 11 years and later moved to Muddy Creek and ran a ranch from 1950 to 1956. They moved to Baker City where he worked for the Forest Service in the Union District and later at the La Grande Air Center. Mr. Chadwick retired after 35 years.

He was a member of the Union Baptist Church where he helped put up the new church building. He loved the mountains and horses and was an excellent packer. He enjoyed music, being with his family, and especially children of all ages. He will be remembered as a true people-person.

Survivors include his wife, of Union; a daughter and her husband, Lyndalin and Phil Kinsella of Washington; a foster son and his wife, Le Moyne and Chuck Titus of Cascade, Idaho; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and other relatives. A brother, Virgil Chadwick, died earlier.

Memorials may be made the Union Baptist Church, Grande Ronde Hospital Hospice or any charity in care of Daniels Chapel.

Gerald Lee Sandlin, 77, of Hermiston and formerly of Joseph died March 21 in Hermiston. A graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday May 6 at the Prairie Creek Cemetery near Joseph.

Mr. Sandlin was born Dec. 5, 1928, to Nicholas and Inez Sandlin on Prairie Creek. He attended school in Enterprise and Hill Military Academy in Portland but graduated in 1946 from Enterprise High School.

He served in the Marines and on March 7, 1947, he married Velma Arlene Habiger in Santa Ana, Calif. He spent most of his life farming on Prairie Creek. He was active in the community and served on the Joseph School Board, worked with FFA and helped his neighbors and other farmers.

After his wife died in 1998 he moved to Hermiston to be closer to his family. On Feb. 25 of this year he married Leilani Davis.

Survivors include his wife of Hermiston; a sister, Betty Jo Talley of Friona, Texas; children and their spouses, Doug and Grace Sandlin of Irrigon, Larry and Pat Sandlin and Rick and Pam Sandlin, all of Boardman, Mike and Sheryl Sandlin of White Salmon, Wash., and Kathy and Steve Wagner of Atwater, Calif.; 17 grandchildren numerous great-grandchildren, stepchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren and other relatives. Three brothers, Homa, Hubert and Melvin Sandlin died earlier.

Memorials may be made to any charity in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise.

Paul Edward Gorham, 77, of Pendleton and formerly of Cove died May 3 at St. Anthony Hospital. A memorial service will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Burns Mortuary of Pendleton. Burial at the Cove Cemetery with Masonic services will be at 1:30 p.m. A brunch will follow at the Cove Lodge.

Mr. Gorham was born Dec. 16, 1928, to Henry Oscar and Violet May Bloom Gorham in Cove. He graduated from Cove High School and served in the Army Air Forces. He became a meteorologist with the Air Force.

He graduated from Eastern Oregon Normal School with a master's degree in education, and on Nov. 10, 1948, he married Lois Aloha Simmons of Cove. She died Dec. 21, 1972.

In February 1975, he married Carol Faye Cave in Pendleton. They divorced in 2003.

Mr. Gorham taught school for 34 years before retiring, and he worked for the Department of Agriculture mostly during the summer months for many years.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, a 50-year life member of the Cove AF&AM Lodge 91, a life member in the Pendleton AF&AM 52, 33-degree member in the Scottish Rite in Pendleton and Baker Valley, past president of Al Kader in Pendleton and Hermiston, and a member of the Royal Order of Scotland and the Red Cross of Constantine. He was a life member of Hermiston No. 138, Cove No. 91 Union and Pendleton No. 52.

Survivors include his sons, Craig and Greg, both of Hermiston, and a daughter, Paula Gorham of Madison, Wis.; a sister, Ardith Gorham Towle of Cove; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Shriners' Children's Hospital, 3101 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland 97201.

Duane Stuart Stedman Smith, 74, of Caldwell, Idaho, and formerly of La Grande and Union died May 1. Dakan Funeral Chapel in Caldwell was in charge of arrangements. No public services are planned.

Mr. Smith was born March 17, 1932, to Basil and Noreen Stedman in Baker City. After his father died his mother married Gordon Smith.

He attended school in La Grande before moving to California. In 1950 he gradueated from Union High School. He served in the Navy during the Korean War. He married his first wife in Ely, Nev., and had four children before they divorced. Later, he married Kaye Heard. They lived in Lovelock, Nev., before moving to Caldwell 12 years ago.

He was a member of the Caldwell Model Railroad Club, and was an artist, rodeo clown, painter, jokester, woodcarver, toy craftsman, animal lover and avid gardener. He and his wife made a home for the stray cats and enjoyed gardening together.

Survivors include his wife of Caldwell; children and their spouses Duff and Lisa Stedman of Spokane, Dani and Doug Sabens of Salem, Ind., Dana and Randy Pendergrass of Valleyford, Wash., and Dena Smith of Medical Lake, Wash.; step-children and their spouses, Mason and Becky Myers of Spring, Texas, and Kitty and Bobby Shipman of Plainview, Texas; 10 grandchildren; siblings and their spouses, Sharon and Butch Vermillion of La Grande, and Jim and Theresa Smith of Union and other relatives. A brother, John Smith, died earlier.
