Obituaries for the week ending May 7, 2005

Muriel Ruth Abbott, 91, of La Grande died April 29. A celebration of life was at 11 a.m. today at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St.

Mrs. Abbot was born July 13, 1913, to Victor Bailey and Augusta Vinzelberg Greenslade in Huntington. She married Robert W Abbott and moved to La Grande in 1946. After his death in 1972 she attended college and made the dean's list. She worked for Hand Ford Co. and Eastern Oregon College. She enjoyed crochet, playing bingo and games of all kinds, working crossword puzzles and traveling.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Wade and Lolamae Abbott of Port Orchard, Wash., Kaye and Harold Rogers of La Grande, Victor and Barbara Abbott of Summerville, Nancy Sargeant of Tualatin, and James and Mary Abbott of Spokane; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. A brother, Basil Greenslade, and a baby daughter died earlier.

Robert Quayle Root, 70, of Auburn, Wash., and formerly of La Grande died April 9, 2004. Burial was at the Tahoma National Cemetery in Maple Valley.

Mr. Root was born June 11, 1934, in La Grande. He moved to Redding, Calif., before serving in the Navy. He lived in Auburn for many years. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed reading Western books, playing pool and spending time at the senior center.

Relatives are invited to contact his friend, William Platt, 1720 Ginko St., S.E., Auburn 98092, (253) 833-5444. The Veterans' Administration flag from the funeral can be given to any remaining relatives.

Winfield Herbert "Herb" Eales, 78, of Chandler, Ariz., and formerly of La Grande died April 24. Burial was at the Valley of the Sun Mausoleum in Chandeler. Bueler Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Eales was born Aug. 11, 1926, to Ben and Ethel Eales in Hutchinson, Kan. He was a pilot and a charter member of the Civil Air Patrol. He served two tours of duty in the Army Air Corps and Air Force. He graduated from the Kansas City College of Mortuary Science and worked as a funeral director and embalmer in La Grande and in Arizona. He and his wife established and ran several businesses.

He always said you could measure a man by the number of people willing to carry his casket. The family conducted a lottery to award the coveted position of pallbearer. He was an optimist, dreamer and hard worker who could fix anything and was always the life of the party.

Survivors include his wife Darlene "Dolly," a sister and brother-in-law, Joan and John Blount of Medford; children, Linda Eales of Scottsdale, Ariz., Kathy and Dave Brady of Bullhead City, Ariz., and Gena Eales of San Francisco, Calif.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to any charity.

Raymond Harlo Clark, 70, of John Day and formerly of La Grande died April 20 at St. Elizabeth Health Services in Baker City. At his request there was no funeral.

Mr. Clark was born Aug. 6, 1934, to Charles and Hazel Clark in La Grande. He attended school in Austin, and graduated from high school in Prairie City in 1952. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service and at the mill in Kinzua, and in 1954 he married Janis Combs. They lived in Bates where he worked for the Edward Hines Lumber Company. When the mill closed in Bates they moved to John Day. He retired as a millwright after 40 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and being out in the hills.

Survivors include his wife of John Day; children and their spouses Cheryl and Terry Sherman of John Day, and Roger Clark of Pilot Rock; three grandchildren; sisters, Lois Jean King of Payette, Idaho, Betty Lou White of Portland, and Stella McCauley of Mt. Vernon.

Two brothers, Charles "Earl" and David Clark died earlier.

Memorials may be made to any charity in care of Tami's Pine Valley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 543, Halfway 97834.

Margaret Saunders Larson, 84, of La Grande died May 4 at her home. Burial will be at Forest Grove Cemetery in Detroit Lakes, Minn.

Celebration of life services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in La Grande. Loveland Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements

Mrs. Larson was born Feb. 2, 1921, to Jack and Marge Trunkey Saunders in Fargo, N.D. She grew up in Fargo and was married to Bud Larson in 1941.

After Bud's retirement in 1969 they moved to Detroit Lakes.

Bud died in 1996. Margaret moved to La Grande in 2000 to be near family.

She was a dear and honored member of the family and loved participating in birthday celebrations, holidays and all other family gatherings. Margaret also enjoyed the company of her many friends, was active in her church, a member of several bridge clubs and was an avid reader. She was a lifelong homemaker, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Survivors include a brother, Frank Saunders of Bird Island, Minn.; children, Margaret McKinnon of Hot Springs Village, Ark., and Mark Larson of La Grande; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to Zion Lutheran Church, 902 Fourth St, La Grande.
