Anita B. Clarridge, 92, of La Grande died Sept. 26 at a local care center. A celebration of life will begin at 2:30 p.m. Thursday Oct. 6 at the Grande Ronde Retirement Residence, 1809 Gekeler Lane, with Pastor Mouse McKinney officiating. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in Mount Sterling, Ohio. Ms. Clarridge was born June 16, 1913 to Alfred and Lydia Pattburg Burger in Arlington, Va. She graduated from Rochester General Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse in 1934. That year she married Ralph E. Clarridge in and lived in Rochester, N.Y. until 1959. The family lived in Massachusetts, California, Alabama and Texas before they settled in La Grande in 1983. She was a member of the Grande Ronde Hospital Auxiliary, the First Presbyterian Church and the Grande Ronde Bird Club. She volunteered as a lunch buddy and a reading buddy in La Grande schools, helped serve meals at the Union County Senior Center and played bridge at every opportunity. Survivors include her children and their spouses, Jean and Stephen Pelletiere, of Mechanicsburg, Penn., Joan and Charles Zartman, of Gig Harbor, Wash., Jill Clarridge of Bremerton, Wash., David Clarridge, of Newburyport, Mass., and Brian and Jeanine Clarridge, of Quincy, Mass.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her husband died earlier. _________________________ Edith Loraine Olsen, 87, of Rio vista, Calif., and formerly of La Grande died Sept. 12. Burial will be in Baker City. Fairfield Funeral Home in Fairfield, Calif., is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Olsen was born april 23, 1918, to Edgar and Susan Bennett in Baker City. She attended La Grande High School and lived in central Idaho for many years. She worked for J.C. Penney's, and after her retirement returned to La Grande. She moved to California in 2002. She was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Rebekah Lodge and the Royal Neighbors of America. Survivors include daughters, Lynne Galletta of Rio Vista, and Pamela Grant of Puyallup, Wash.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Memorials may be made to any local hospice organization. ________________________ Vivian Jeannette Foye, 93, of La Grande and formerly of Medical Springs died Oct. 3 at a local care center. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Oct. 15 at 50551 Big Creek Road in Medical Springs. Mrs. Foye was born Aug. 21, 1912, to Ben H. and Mildred Schoenauer Jory in Union, a descendant of pioneers of 1847. She attended schools in Mission, Umatilla and Hermiston, and graduated from Union High School in 1931. On Aug. 9, 1935, she married Nesden Wright Foye, and except for a short time in Oakland Calif., during The Depression, spent the rest of her life in Medical Springs until she moved to a care center three years ago. The couple ran the Ox Bow Guest Ranch in the 1940s, and cooked for the road crew when the Medical Springs highway was being paved. In the 1950s they had a store, and she served as postmaster for 28 years. She retired in 1978. She was a member of the Sons and Daughters of Oregon Pioneers and the National Auxiliary of Postmasters. She enjoyed gardening, photography, the mountains, wildlife, raising African violets and visiting with her neighbors. Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Janice and Jerry Baxter of Medical Springs; a daughter-in-law, Judy Foye of Yakima; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Her husband, a son Ned Jr., a brother, Vernon "Bud" Jory, and two sisters, Maxine and Louise, all died earlier. _____________________ Mary A. Carper, 78, of College Place, Wash., and formerly of Wallowa and Union counties died Sept. 30 at a care center. A graveside service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday Oct. 7 at the Milton-Freewater Cemetery. Mrs. Carper was born Oct. 19, 1926, to Emmet and Erma Chenoweth Landers in Enterprise. She attended school in Wallowa before the family moved to California. On their return she married Fredrick C. Carper in Enterprise on Dec. 31, 1947. The couple lived in Wallowa, Elgin and Milton Freewater where she worked at local canneries, a tree farm, the Athena School District and St. Mary Medical Center. She enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Bary and Stacie Carper of Milton-Freewater; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her husband and a son, Bruce, died earlier. Memorials may be made to the Walla Walla Community Hospice through Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main St., Milton-Freewater. _______________________ Pearl Irene Pierce, 84, of Pahrump, Nev., and formerly of La Grande died Oct. 1 at Southern Hills Hospital in Las Vegas, Nev. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Elgin Community Center. Mrs. Pierce was born May 22, 1921, to John and Emma Raymond in Black Rock, Utah. The family moved to California, and on July 28, 1949, she married Artie Gay Pierce Jr. in Las Vegas, Nev. They moved to Oregon in 1955 and raised their children in La Grande before moving to Pahrump in1989. She played a violin in the church as a teenager and loved music. She took great pride in her family, and enjoyed crafts and crochet. Survivors include her husband of Pahrump; children and their spouses, Artie and LaLa Pierce of Tillamook, Lindsey and Carolyn Pierce of Summerville, Ray and Marilyn Morrison of Pahrump, and Roberta and Dale Witherspoon; 19 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Four sisters, two brothers and two grandchildren died earlier. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Cancer Society in care of Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St. _________________________ Emma Jean "E.J." Tubbin, 85, of Wallowa County died Oct. 3 in Portland. A memorial service will begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday Oct. 8 at the Enterprise Christian Church. Mrs. Tubbin was born Aug. 7, 1920, to Jesse and Sarah Scholl in Enterprise. She married Leonard "Pete" Tubbin in May of 1945 in Lewiston, Idaho. She graduated from Eastern Oregon Normal School and taught in Grass Valley, Bend, Pratt, Lostine and Wallowa over a career of 30 years. She was a member of Eastern Star, the Lady Lions, the Retired Teachers Association and the Enterprise Christian Church. Survivors include children, Allan Tubbin of Beaverton, Stephen Tubbin of Portland and Linda StewArt of Sun City, Ariz.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a sister, Dorothy Freels of Meritt, B.C., Canada. Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to the scholarship fund of the Wallowa County Retired Teachers Association or the OHSU Layton Aging and Alzheimer's Disease Center in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise. ________________________ Cassino Mosher, 82, of Highland, Calif., and formerly of La Grande died Oct. 2 at her home. A memorials service will be held in Highland. Mrs. Cassino was born Feb. 27, 1923, to Edward and Edna Deborde Hartley in Cove. She attended school there and worked as a fish counter at Bonneville Dam during World War II. She drove a pilot car in California for years. She married Herbert Rollston, and after a divorce she married Herb Mosher. She was a member of the Jehovah's Witness Church and enjoyed flowers and crochet. Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Lenan "Del" and Vareta Hartley of La Grande, and other relatives. __________________________ Donald Dean Weatherspoon, 62, of Elgin died Sept. 15 at St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla. Herring Groseclose Funeral Home in Milton-Freewater is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Weatherspoon was born June 22, 1943, to Fred and Luella Rysdam Weatherspoon in La grande. He attended school in Elgin and worked as a logger, commercial fisherman and truck driver. On april 7, 1988, he married Evelyn Brock in Elgin. He enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting and spending time with his friends and family. Survivors include his wife of Elgin; children, Sonia Weatherspoon of La Grande and Dick Weatherspoon of Everett, Wash.; a sister ad brother-in-law, Arlene and Frank Showers of Gold Canyon, Ariz.; five grandchildren and other relatives. _________________________ Robert James Masterson, 63, of Halfway died , Oct. 3 at St. Luke Regional Medical Center in Boise. A graveside service will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8 at Pine Haven Cemetery with Pastor Shawn Thatcher of Pine Baptist Church officiating. Military rites will be accorded by the Halfway VFW Post. A reception will follow at the VFW hall. Mr. Masterson was born Aug. 5, 1942, to Clyde and Velma Tyler Masterson in Halfway. He graduated from high school in 1960, and served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. In Dec. 1962 he married Kristine Kipp. He worked for Idaho Power Co. as maintenance mechanic, and retired after 36 years. He was a member of the Halfway Reunion Committee, and a life member of the Halfway VFW. He served on the board of the Pine Eagle Health Planning Committee where he was chairman for a year, and was secretary of the Clear Creek Reservoir for many years. He loved his family and his dogs, and enjoyed working with his cows, hunting, working in his shop, visiting and telling stories. He enjoyed laughing and joking, and never met a stranger. He was a loyal man, and integrity meant everything to him. Survivors include his wife of Halfway; children and their spouses, Robyn and Mike Immoos, and Terese Masterson; his mother; a sister, Bev DuBosch; three brothers, Fred, Tom and Mike Masterson; aunts and uncles, Bud and Dorothy Tyler, and Christine Tyler; and other relatives. His father died earlier. Memorials may be made to the Lymphoma and Leukemia Foundation, the Halfway Ambulance or the Pine Eagle Clinic in care of Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place Street, Baker City 97814. ________________________ Donald Rudolph Guyer, 84, of Baker City and formerly of La Grande died Oct. 5 at his home. The funeral will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday Oct. 10 at the Baker City United Methodist Church, 1919 Second Street. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by the Marine Corps. Mr. Guyer was born Aug. 5, 1921, to George Henry and Delia Lydia Buxton Guyer in New Bridge. He graduated from Baker High School in 1940, and attended Oregon State College. He served in the Navy and Marine Corps during World War II and again during the Korean War. On Nov. 10, 1944, he married Elva Lou Gribble in Fresno, Calif. They lived in Sanford, Fla., for a year before returning to Baker City where he worked for the Eastern Oregon Federal Savings and Loan Association, which became Pioneer Federal Savings and Loan Association. He opened the first branch in La Grande in 1959. He became a member of the board and president of the Association when the family moved back to Baker City in 1980. He retired after 55 years. He was a member of the Shrine Club, the Masons, the Knights Templar, the La Grande Elks, the Lions Club, the La Grande Chamber of Commerce board, the American Legion, the United Methodist Church and the VFW. In 1977, he was chosen Boss of the Year by the La Grande Legal Secretaries. He enjoyed the beauty of the Baker Valley, hunting, fishing and traveling south for the winter. Survivors include his wife of Baker City; children and their spouses, Ellen and David Youngbluth of Prineville, and Marine Major Steven M. O'Connor and his wife Navy Lt. Commander Alda; one grandchild; a brother-in-law Guy McCoy and his wife Sue, and other relatives. A brother and sister-in-law, Randell and Shirley Guyer, and a sister and brother-in-law, Shurley and Doug Benton, all died earlier. Memorials may be made to the Shrine Hospital for Children or to the United Methodist Church memorial fund in care of Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place Street, Baker City 97814. __________________________ Glen Orville Doud, 91, of La Grande, died Oct. 6, 2005, at a local care center. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Summerville Cemetery. Mr. Doud was born on Oct. 6, 1914, the son of Ira and Elpha (Downing) Doud in Farry, Oklahoma. He served with the United States Army during World War II. On March 11, 1944, he married Wanda G. Hays in Pendleton. They lived in Milton-Freewater from 1948 until 1955 when they moved to Elgin. He worked in lumber mills until his retirement and enjoyed hunting. They moved to La Grande in 1996. Survivors include his wife, Wanda Doud of La Grande; son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Linda Doud of North Powder; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends. Brothers Archie, Charles and Amos died earlier. Memorials may be made to the GRH Hospice in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., La Grande 97850. __________________________ Nettie Marie Snowberger, 77, of La Grande died Oct. 6 at her home. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Monday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1508 Seventh St., with pastors Loyd Hoke and Raymond Bates of the Sonrise Free Methodist Church officiating. A private burial will be at the Grandview Cemetery. Mrs. Snowberger was born Jan. 23, 1928, to Ray and Allie Curtis Ring in McPherson, Kan. On May 30, 1948, she married Kenneth M. Snowberger in McPherson. They moved to La Grande in 1973. She was a den mother and Brownie leader, and taught Vacation Bible School and Sunday school. She was known for accepting everyone without judgment. Survivors include her husband of La Grande; children, Diane Smith of Wichita, Kan., David Snowberger of Alamogordo, N.M., Kathy Snowberger of Bend, Patricia Downing of Hermiston, Daniel Snowberger of Tracy, Calif., and Larry Snowberger of Port Angeles, Calif.; a sister, Lillian Holler of McPherson; 22 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and other relatives. Two brothers and a sister died earlier. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sonrise Free Methodist building fund in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley. |
