Obituaries for the week ending September 22, 2007

John C. ‘Jake' Hefner

Union

1937-2007

John C. "Jake" Hefner, 69, of Union, died Sept. 12 at the Grande Ronde Hospital. A celebration of life will begin at

2 p.m. Friday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley. Private burial will follow at Union Cemetery.

Jake was born on Dec. 23, 1937, the son of Howard and Wilma (Starnes) Hefner in Hickory, N.C. The family moved to Oregon when he was 12. He attended schools in Pilot Rock. On Jan. 4, 1969, he married Dianne Bartsch in Pendleton. They ranched at Medical Springs until 1976 when they moved to Union.

Jake loved the Grande Ronde Valley and its four seasons. He was a very active member of the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show, was president in 1992-93 and was supervisor of the race track. He was also a member of the Cattleman's Association. He earned the title of Cattleman of the Year in 1998. Those who knew him say he was great with older people and enjoyed coffee time with his buddies. He loved the outdoors, hunting, horses and sitting on his patio watching the world around him. He could often be found riding his four-wheeler down the road with his dog, Bingo.

Survivors include his wife, Dianne of Union; children, Kathy and Kelly McDowell of La Grande, John and JoAnn Hefner of Union, Jeff McClaskey of Touchet, Wash., and Wendy and Rob Langford of Union; sisters, Shirley Reeves of Hickory, N.C., Adalee Robins of Hickory, Barbara Ann Snyder of Pendleton and Betty Sue of Hickory; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild and other relatives. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca Hefner.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., La Grande 97850.

Allan J. Sigler

Formerly of La Grande

Allan J. Sigler, 89, of Baker City and formerly of La Grande, died Sept. 17 at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Hope Cemetery in Baker City with Pastor David Eddy of Faith Center, La Grande, officiating. Viewing runs from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at Gray's West and Company. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery and there will be a reception at the family's home.

Allan lived in La Grande from 1977 through 1980.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Elizabeth Care Center in care of Gray's West and Company, 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker City 97814.

Elma M. Fullmer

La Grande

1916-2007

Elma Mary ( Amos ) Fullmer, 91, of La Grande died Sept. 18 at a local care center. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the LDS Church on 12th Street and Gekeler Lane. Bishop David W. Clemens will officiate.

Viewing will run from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday in the children's meeting room. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Elma was born April 27, 1916, to Orien Monroe Amos and Gladys Ethel Baum in

La Grande. She attended schools in La Grande.

On Nov. 22, 1934, she married LeVern E. Fullmer in

La Grande. They were later sealed in the LDS Temple in Mesa, Ariz. Her husband was in the U.S. Navy and she followed him to several places in the United States where he was stationed. She lived in Seattle; several places in California including Long Beach, Vallejo, San Francisco and San Diego; Pittsburg, Pa., and Newport, R.I., but she always considered La Grande home.

She was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a member of the women's Relief Society organization and spent many hours helping others in need.

She is survived by her son, E. Eugene Fullmer of La Grande; sister, Darlena Hargett of La Grande; eight grandchildren and their spouses; 37 great-grandchildren; and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter, Muriel Rae Wagoner; brothers, Lloyd Amos, Lonnie Amos, Carl Amos and Leland Amos.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Family History Center, P.O. Box 31, La Grande 97850, or in care of Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St. in

La Grande.

Elizabeth M. Hair

La Grande

1941-2007

Elizabeth "Beth" M. Hair, 66, of La Grande, died Sept. 18 at her home. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in La Grande.

Beth was born Jan. 30, 1941, to George and Betty McBride in Zanesville, Ohio.

Beth lived in Westerville, Ohio, where she graduated from high school. She received her bachelor of science degree, master's degree and a doctorate from the Ohio State University, where she specialized in aquatic biology.

In 1971, she met Don Hair and they married on Jan. 15, 1972, in Westerville, Ohio. They lived in Put-In-Bay, Ohio. In 1978, the couple moved to Idaho when Don began working for the U.S. Forest Service. After Don retired in 2003, they moved to La Grande.

Beth is survived by her husband, Don; children, John, Ellen and Megan; seven grandchildren; brother, John P. (Phil) McBride; and sister, Mary Ellen McBride.

Those who knew her say Beth made lasting friendships wherever she went. She enjoyed knitting, bird watching, cutting firewood, picking huckleberries, reading, volunteering and being with friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests feeding someone that is hungry, helping someone in need, living a good life, being a kind person, making a donation to a food bank or shelter and living "green."

Ruth L. Van Cleave

La Grande

1921-2007

Ruth Letta Van Cleave, 85, of La Grande, died Sept. 13 at her home of natural causes. At the family's request, there will be no services. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth was born Oct. 24, 1921, to Gottlieb and Elsie (Bauman) Fund in Prosser, Wash., the fifth of six children. Her parents were both born in Switzerland.

She was married to David A. Van Cleave in 1947 until he died in April 1997. Together they owned Twin V Jewelers of Yakima, Wash. She retired in 1974. Those who knew her say Ruth loved her family as well as her Seventh-day Adventist church family.

Throughout their 50 years together, she and David enjoyed golf, bowling and gardening, and they were members of the Elks (BPOE) of Yakima. Ruth moved to

La Grande in 2002 to be near her nephew and his family.

She is survived by her brother, Art Fund of California; sister, Margaret Hall of Walla Walla; nephews, Billi Lee Van Cleave of Yakima, Dwayne and his wife, Jane Fund, of Portland, and Steve and his wife, Tami Fund, of La Grande; grandnieces; one great-grandniece; and one great-grandnephew. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brothers, John, Otto and Paul.
