Obituaries for Sept. 7, 2012

Wayne L. Foster

Baker County

 Wayne Libby Foster, a longtime Baker County rancher, died Aug. 21 at home with his family present. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sept. 9 at the United Methodist Church, 1919 Second Street, in Baker City. Friends are invited to join the family for a dinner being served immediately following the service at the church.

Betty C. King

Formerly of Wallowa County

Betty C. (Holloran) King, formerly of Wallowa County, died Sept. 5 in Sacramento, Calif. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Wallowa Christian Church. Loveland Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.

Luverne G. Moore


Luverne G. Moore, 85, of Union, died Sept. 6 at a local care facility. An obituary will be published at a later date. Loveland Funeral Chapel and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Nolan Kim Swart

La Grande


Nolan Kim Swart, 57, of La Grande, died  Sept. 3 at his mother’s home. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date.

Kim was born Jan. 29, 1954, in La Grande to Bernard LeRoy and June Eleanor (Flanagan) Swart. He grew up in La Grande and attended Central Elementary and La Grande Middle and High Schools. He played football for La Grande High School. Kim married Kathy Lynn Skoubo and they had two children, Charlotte and Amanda.

Kim was employed with the Union Pacific Railroad as a brakeman, as his father was before him. In 1995, he suffered injuries from a train wreck that required him to retire.

A buyer and seller of antiques, Kim enjoyed woodworking and refinishing. He loved the outdoors and going on hikes in the mountains when his health allowed. He loved all animals and always took great care of his dogs, who loved him back equally as much. He will be greatly missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bernard Swart.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy of La Grande; children, Charlotte Thompson and Amanda Gobel of Vancouver, Wash.; mother, June E. Wood of La Grande; siblings and their spouses, Gayle and Jim Wheeler of La Grande and Kirk and Jackie Swart of Vancouver; two grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and one aunt.

Memorial donations may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in care of Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 4th Street, La Grande 97850. Online condolence to the family may be made at www.lovelandfuneralchapel.com.

Robert W. Wiggins

Formerly of Joseph


Robert W. Wiggins, 88, formerly of Joseph, died Aug. 18 in Star, Idaho, with his children by his side. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 15 at Prairie Creek Cemetery in Joseph.

Bob was born Oct. 29, 1923, to Irene Babcock and Lee Roy Wiggins in the Palouse on the family wheat ranch near Johnson, Wash. He graduated from Pullman High School, attended Washington State University and was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity. In 1951 he married Jean E. Wiegand of Corvallis, and they had three children.

During his high school and college years, Bob vacationed with his family at Wallowa Lake. In 1945 his mother, Irene, bought Wallowa Lake Lodge and the Wiggins family operated the lodge for 43 years. 

Bob kept everything running as a part owner-operator and mentored many high school and college kids who worked there during the summer. He loved to tell visitors about the area and had many stories he shared with them.

Bob loved to boat, write, read, travel and was fascinated by science and science fiction. In 1988 the Wiggins family sold the lodge and Bob retired. 

He enjoying traveling during his retirement with his partner of many years, Vera Talbott. In 1990 he bought a place in Clarkston, Wash., and lived half his year there and the other half at Wallowa Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lee Wiggins; and partner, Vera Talbott. 

Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Duane and Jane Wiggins of Joseph; ex-wife, Jean Wiggins of Joseph; children and their siblings, Chris and Barbara Wiggins of Whitefish, Mont., Cathy and Brad Graybeal of Eagle, Idaho, and Eric and Erin Wiggins of Lebanon; and two grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to Legacy Hospice Foundation, 680 S. Progress Ave., Suite 2A, Meridian, Idaho 83642.
