Upper Grande Ronde Mine Tailings, Restoration Project
Environmental Assessment
USDA Forest Service
Wallowa-Whitman National Forest
La Grande Ranger District
Union County, Oregon
On March 3, 2009, District Ranger, Kurt Wiedenmann, made a decision to implement Alternative two the Upper Grande Ronde Mine Tailings Restoration project. The project area is located on the Grande Ronde River, from the Forest boundary to approximately the mouth of Tanner Gulch (T6S, R36E sec 4, 5, 9, 10, 15). The mouth of East Fork Grande Ronde River is also part of the project. Approximately 4.7 miles of stream are involved. Alternative two best meets the purpose and need of this project and best addresses the attainment of the desired future conditions. This alternative will improve floodplain connectivity, water capture, storage and release within the floodplain by removing mine tailings that are restricting the natural meander of the river. Alternative two will place large woody debris into the river which improves the quality and quantity of pools, fish cover, habitat complexity, residual pool depth and juvenile fish passage at low flows.
