ROOSTER VEGETATION MANAGEMENT
ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT
USDA - Forest Service
Wallowa-Whitman National Forest
La Grande Ranger District
Union County, Oregon
On August 11, 2010, District Ranger, Kurt Wiedenmann, made a decision to implement alternative two of the Rooster Vegetation Management project. The 14,574 acre Rooster Project located south of Vey Meadows in the Chicken Creek, Indiana Creek and the Chicken Hill area is approximately 20 miles southwest of La Grande. The project area is located in sections within T.6S R.35-36E and 7S, R. 35E, Willamette Meridian.
Alternative 2 will perform areas of mechanical harvest/removal and prescribed burning, stocking density reduction, hazard tree removal, temporary road construction, road reconstruction, fuel reduction, and harvest removal by tractor yarding system. No new road construction will be required. In this alternative, stands identified as needing density management, removal of dwarf mistletoe, or fuel reduction, were selected for treatment with the exception of those stands of critical high quality cover retained to provide cover and connectivity habitat. The highest quality, functional cover stands and best available connective corridor stands would be either retained for their cover value in this alternative or the prescription modified to provide functional corridors between stands of old growth.
