A special senior project
A special senior project
|
The best senior projects do some good not only for the student but also
for the world at large. This year, Reva West dreamed up a dandy. West, a junior at Imbler High, was the prime mover in Breast Cancer Awareness Night Jan. 16 at the school. The event she designed yielded $1,200, putting her well on the way toward her goal of raising more than $2,000 for breast cancer research by the time she graduates. In the beginning, West took inspiration from her mother, Mary, an Imbler High teacher who stresses the value of taking responsibility for one’s own health care. Once Reva had the idea, she enlisted help. She teamed with her older sister, Jamie Jo Cant, in the initial planning. Then Imbler basketball coach Barry Bowers and Wallowa High School Athletic Director and basketball coach Warren Wilson threw their support behind the project. The event was planned for Friday, Jan. 16, a day when Imbler hosted Wallowa for five basketball games including a C game and boys and girls junior varsity and varsity contests. Pink is the color the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has chosen to symbolize the fight against the disease, and that night, the Imbler girls varsity dressed accordingly in pink uniforms. For more visual stimulation, the Cougars from Wallowa wore pink patches. Half of the proceeds from these games, plus money collected in donation jars and at a “Bucks for the Cure” table, is going to the Komen Foundation, the world’s largest and most progressive grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists. The foundation, it should be noted, has $9 million committed to breast cancer research. This year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Night at Imbler High is something West and many others, including players, coaches and fans, can be proud of for a long time to come. Here’s hoping next year’s edition is every bit as successful. |
