Congratulations to state champion golf team

Many people had a sense that this year’s La Grande High School boys golf
team had a lot of potential, maybe even enough to claim a state
championship. But having the potential and actually accomplishing such a
lofty goal are two different things. Tuesday the team proved it is a
champion, winning the Oregon Class 4A state title at Eagle Crest Resort.
Beating out a host of excellent teams at a 4A state tournament isn’t an easy feat. In fact, after the first day, La Grande was six shots off the lead set by Klamath Union. But this Tiger team persevered and did exactly what it needed to do to bring home the championship. Mavric Goss led the Tigers’ performance at state. He birdied the final hole to record a 1-under 71 to make up the two strokes needed for the team victory. Individually, he finished with a combined total of 150, a two-stroke runnerup to medalist Justin Wiles of Klamath, who shot a 75 in the second round but took top individual honors with a combined score of 148. Taylor Mutch brought in La Grande’s next-best score, combining for a 160, carding an 82 the first day and a 78 the second day. Joey Tinker finished at 166, Piper McCallum had 167 and Daniel Seymour and Joel Wylam rounded out the scoring, combining for a 182 with Wylam playing the first day and Seymore the second day. LHS coach Ron Evans said the victory was “awesome,’’ and he credited all his players. He said he had a feeling the team had a shot at the title. He and his players were right. Aiming for a state title wasn’t an impossible goal. With veteran leaders on the team like Goss and Mutch, and a solid supporting cast, the Tigers have dominated tournaments all year. That they were after a state title wasn’t a stretch. These young men have done their school and community proud. Way to go, Tiger golfers! |
