Develop an attitude of gratitude

It’s Thanksgiving. The Great Recession is turning out to be only fair to good. Costs are rising. Paychecks, for those who are lucky enough to have one, are stagnating. Everywhere you look, it seems, the economic biscuits are burning.
But hold the call to the fire department. Are things really all that bad?

If you have a job, even if you got a pay cut, or haven’t had a cost of living adjustment ...
You have something to be thankful for.

If you have health insurance, even if a big chunk is taken out of your paycheck ...
You have something to be thankful for.

If you have your health, even if the last doctor bill seemed to be exorbitant ...
You have something to be thankful for.

If you have your freedom, when a soldier is going to Iraq or Afghanistan ...
You have something to be thankful for.

If you have clothes, even if they’re not the latest fashions ...
You have something to be thankful for.

If you have heat, even if the heating bill seems to be going through the roof ...
You have something to be thankful for.

If you hear the neighbor’s music, even if it’s a kind of music you despise ...
You have something to be thankful for.

If you see the sunrise, when a blind person can only imagine it ...
You have something to be thankful for.

If you hate what the government is doing and can complain publicly about it, and use your Freedom of Speech ...
You have something to be thankful for.

If you have to park in a parking spot far from the store, and can walk to your destination ...
You have something to be thankful for.

If your team doesn’t win the big game, but you have a chance to come back again next year ...
You have something to be thankful for.

If you get to travel, even if the roads are slippery or you have to go through airport security measures that seem invasive ...
You have something to be thankful for.

The point is, on this Thanksgiving we need to keep life in perspective and give thanks for what we do have: family, friends and freedom.
