Explore solar, other renewables this weekend

Area residents will have a chance to find out  about the possibilities of solar energy and other renewables this weekend during the first local solar fair. The Eastern Oregon Solar Fair will be held Friday through Sunday in La Grande. Homeowners, businesses and anyone interested in finding out about solar energy are invited to partake in the fair, which will include a tour of homes Saturday afternoon and Sunday.

The event will kick off at 6 p.m. Friday at Mt. Emily Ale House with a workshop by Solar Oregon on the “Commercial Basics of Going Solar.’’

The fair moves to Eastern Oregon University Saturday, beginning with  a workshop on “Residential Basics of Going Solar.’’ A question and answer session with various renewable energy professionals will follow.

At the same time, local vendors of renewable energy products will be available to discuss their products and services.

The tour of four area solar homes will commence at 12:15 p.m. Saturday with a free bus to carry fairgoers to the solar homes that will be open for people to check out what is possible.

The solar home open house will continue on Sunday. Hop a bus at Max Square at 12:30 p.m.

The Union County Alternative Energy Committee, in conjunction with Oregon Rural Action and other entities, have combined forces to sponsor the fair.

If you’ve been curious about the potential of solar energy and other renewables, this weekend should provide some answers. Plan to attend and explore what’s possible.
