HELP ENSURE GREAT FIREWORKS SHOW
Independence Day is always a special time for America and for Americans. But this year's celebration will be extra special. The coming Independence Day holiday will be a time for Americans to show their colors and truly Celebrate America.
UNION COUNTY'S all-volunteer Fireworks Action Committee is in the process of putting together and raising funds for this year's celebration. The committee can't do it without the public's support. Donations are needed to the Fireworks Fund, P.O. Box 135, La Grande,to make sure that local citizens can continue to enjoy the kind of show they've been treated to the past several years.
This year's show will be different from years past because the celebration at Community Stadium will take place on Friday, July 5. Holding the community event the day after the Fourth will allow people to spend the Fourth of July with their families and extend the celebration an extra day. This year, especially, is a good time for a two-day salute to America.
BUT THE TRUTH BE KNOWN, extending Union County's celebration wasn't done solely to provide for a two-day "Fourth of July." The Fireworks Action Committee is putting a positive spin on what a few weeks ago seemed like a disastrous situation. That's when the committee learned that its fireworks provider was not available for a July 4 show. The committee set out to find a replacement. Finally, it contracted with another provider, Western Fireworks, for a show on July 5, which falls on a Friday and will be a good lead-in to the weekend.
The event at Community Stadium will include food, games, a kiddies parade, music, a celebration of patriotism and fireworks. All the ingredients are in place for a wonderful evening. The community's generosity the past few years has provided a nest egg for paying for the show, but additional donations are needed each year to ensure that the show can maintain its quality. So far this year, donations have been coming in at a slow pace. The carryover is rapidly coming to an end.
ANYONE WHO HAS SEEN the show knows that it is worthy of support. Every donation — from the $2 suggested for each family member, to the $50 Patriots Club membership, to the $250 or more for the Business Booster category, to Corporate Sponsorships (of $1,000) — helps ensure that the show will go on.
Times are tough and the economy is sluggish. But considering what America has been through over the past year, Americans have cause to celebrate. If contributing a few bucks is what it will take to help ensure our community's celebration, we should all chip in at whatever level we can. As a community we can make it happen.
So, enjoy the Fourth of July at home with family and friends, then join your neighbors and others the night of July 5 for a community salute to America. Our country, and Americans as a whole, deserve it.
