Help support Saturday’s Santa Mall

The Santa Mall has become one of our area’s greatest Christmas traditions. And for good reason. It gives children a chance to make sure they can buy gifts for their loved ones — even if they don’t have the resources to do so.
The Santa Mall, sponsored by the Oregon National Guard and the La Grande Lions Club, is set for Saturday at the Blue Mountain Conference Center. Santa Mall will open at 9 a.m. with the arrival of Santa Claus. It will run through 2 p.m. The mall is especially designed for kids, but others are invited too. A variety of vendors — last year there were 49 — will be on hand offering a splendid array of gift items, all priced at $5 or less.

What makes the Santa Mall extra special is the fact that kids from homes facing financial difficulties are given Santa Dollars to shop with. The amount of Santa Dollars available depends on contributions made to the program, which is in its 15th year. This year, Santa Mall could use more.

The donations ensure that a lot of kids have a chance to purchase gifts. (Families have until noon Wednesday to qualify kids for receiving Santa Dollars; call 541-910-7308.) It would be nice to see the community step up with donations for the Santa Mall. Donations, made out to La Grande Lions/Santa Claus Mall, can be sent to Santa Claus Mall, 61351 Conley Road, Cove 97824. Or simply stop by the Santa Mall Saturday at the conference center.

The Santa Mall benefits our community in lots of ways. Not only does it provide a low-cost place for kids to shop, but it also provides a place for a lot of vendors to sell their wares.

Please help support it — either by shopping there Saturday or by making a donation. Or better yet, do both.
