Join EOU celebration this week

Fall is in the air. Along with cooler nights and bright days come annual traditions, and one that many here look forward to is Eastern Oregon University homecoming.

It’s a chance for students, alumni and community members to come together to honor the past, present and future of EOU.

Events are many. Festivities begin Thursday with the annual Choirs of the Valley concert in McKenzie Theatre in Loso Hall.

The big Homecoming Parade begins Friday at 5 p.m. and runs through downtown La Grande on Adams Avenue with retired Union County Circuit Court Judge Eric Valentine leading the way as grand marshal.

Later Friday evening the late President Emeritus David Gilbert will be remembered for his dedication and service at a ceremony to rename the Ackerman Hall gymnasium in his memory.

It’s a well deserved recognition for EOU’s longest-serving president to date. Gilbert helped set up collaborations with Oregon Health & Science University’s School of Nursing and with Oregon State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences, among many other accomplishments.

Saturday highlights include Mountaineer football. EOU faces Rocky Mountain College at 1 p.m. in Community Stadium. Eastern Student Entertainment is also organizing activities during homecoming week including Friday as EOU spirit day with the parade and bonfire, and Saturday with a street dance.

Whether you are a student, alumnus or community member, homecoming week is a chance to join your friends and neighbors and celebrate everything EOU means to the region.
