Optimist Field project hits a home run

Many volunteers have stepped up to the plate and hit for the fences in the Optimist Field improvement project. It’s a sign of the enthusiasm that remains for baseball since La Grande High School won the Class 4A state title in 2007. And it’s testament to the many individuals and institutions working for the betterment of the community.

The Optimist Field project involves installing a new batting cage complex. The complex will make the practice area safer for players and the field improved for spectator viewing opportunities.

The bigger point here is, almost 30 percent of Oregonians contribute significant time to community service, or about 50 hours per year or more. These people find that the investment in their community pays rich dividends, especially as they get involved with people and projects. Involved citizens no matter what age do get health benefits from their commitment to projects and other people.

The Optimist Field project is just one more effort that promotes the value of community service in the local area. And in these times of economic hardship, people’s readiness to get involved and pitch in is even more impressive. There are plenty more opportunities to get involved in such causes as fund drives, food banks and elder care, and we’re hoping Northeast Oregon’s volunteer team continues swinging for the fences to make our communities stronger.
