Both sides in the area’s big wind farm debate had a chance to present
their cases to the state Energy Facility Siting Council last week at a
meeting in Union. The hearing in the S.E. Miller School gymnasium gave
residents a chance to voice their opinions and served as a good reminder
that the public comment period is open.

Wallowa County folks seem to understand that if you live at the end of
the road at a relatively high elevation in a mountainous land, you’ve
got to give people a reason to visit and venture outdoors — especially
in winter. And that goes even if the end of the road falls in one of the
most beautiful areas of the state. Wallowa County keeps the events
coming, even in winter.

Teacher training can pay big dividends, whether a person pursues a
career at a school or works in some other area altogether. Proof is Doug
Trice. The local Special Olympics coach who has been named assistant
coach for the Team USA track and field squad at the 2011 Special
Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece, trained to be a teacher
at Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon University) in
Monmouth. After graduating in 1974, however, he landed a job with Union
Pacific Railroad, where he has worked ever since.
