Remember meaning of Memorial Day

Memorial Weekend is upon us. Although the weather isn’t conducive to
the kind of holiday weekend most of us look forward to and enjoy, it
shouldn’t stop us from honoring those service men and women who gave
their lives for their country.
Memorial Day really is about a whole lot more than a day off from work, a picnic in the park or a backyard barbecue. Too many people have forgotten the purpose of the holiday. There are those among us who mark Memorial Weekend by honoring and remembering all of our departed loved ones. And we should. But we mustn’t forget that the original purpose of Memorial day, once called Decoration Day, was to honor those who died while serving their country. We must never forget the sacrifices service men and women make for the rest of us, for our way of life, for our country. Without their dedication, the freedoms we enjoy every day would not be possible. Many have given their lives — their time with friends and family cut short because they cared enough to serve. We must continue to honor their lives. Memorial Day provides us with an opportunity to do just that. Take time this weekend to remember those sacrifices. And plan to attend a Memorial Day service in your community. In Union, a service is planned for 9 a.m. at the gazebo at Union City Park. At Grandview Cemetery in La Grande, where the grand Avenue of Flags will once again be presented, a service is planned for 11 a.m. In Wallowa County, the VFW and American Legion will hold services at cemeteries throughout the county (see story, Page 1A, for times and locations). |
