Special ceremony Sunday will honor emergency services, military personnel

Sunday will be a solemn day for most Americans as we pause to remember the tragic events that unfolded 10 years ago. Sept. 11, 2001, is a day like few others that will live in infamy because of the terrorists attacks that took so many lives and shook our nation to its core. But remember that day we will, forever and always. The La Grande Fire Department is planning a special 9/11 remembrance for Sunday. At
9 a.m. the fire department will conduct a special flag-raising ceremony and short program at the fire station on Cove Avenue in tribute of the emrgency services and military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice that fateful day 10 years ago, and to honor those who continue to protect and serve
locally.

Emergency vehicles and personnel will assemble at the fire station at 8:15 a.m., with the program to follow at 9.

Sept. 11, 2001, is etched in the minds of us all, but emergency services personnel have an even closer connection than most of us because of the huge number of responders who died in the collapse of the Twin Towers. Those responders were doing what all emergency services personnel are trained to do. They, like our military folks, are the kinds of people who are willing to put their lives on the line day in and day out for the benefit of all of us.

We thank them for their dedication. Sunday’s tribute is an opportunity for the public to show our appreciation for these special men and women.
