Support military, families by displaying red, white, blue

The volunteer citizen soldiers of the Oregon Army National Guard, Third Battalion, 116th Cavalry have returned home from their mission to La Grande. Many people turned out to welcome them home at a demobilization ceremony Oct. 8 at Community Stadium on the Eastern Oregon University campus. That salute was great. But it is not enough. The National Guard’s efforts, and those of other servicemen and servicewomen, is being honored through a city of La Grande proclamation recognizing Operation Enduring Support and the Red, White and Blue campaign now through Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

The yellow ribbons put out to honor the Third Battalion during their second tour to Iraq are coming down. In their place, citizens are expressing their gratitude by displaying red, white and blue ribbons as continuing support for military service members, veterans and military families.

La Grande Mayor Dan Pokorney has signed a proclamation to that effect. It encourages individuals to display U.S. flags or red, white and blue ribbons.

Here’s a salute to the military members and to Operation Enduring Support, the force behind the proclamation. Operation Enduring Support is a committee of community leaders, citizens and service providers from Union, Wallowa and Baker counties that supports veterans, active military service members and their families.
