TIME FOR A CHANGE: VOTE BOGUE HIBBERT
Nothing has divided Union County more than the race for the Republican nomination for Position 1 on the Union County Board of Commissioners. Not even the sheriff or DA races of two years ago, or the county commission race four years ago equaled what has been going on the past couple of months. The race between incumbent John Lamoreau and Union County Clerk Nellie Bogue Hibbert is setting a new precedent for attack-style campaigning in Union County — due to the tactics of Lamoreau.
The time has come for Union County residents to say enough is enough. The kind of negativity, attacks and general ill-will that Lamoreau has fostered in this campaign, and through much of his three-plus years on the commission, has resulted in a divisive atmosphere the likes of which this county has never seen.
The good news is that there is a respectable, hard-working, dedicated person running against him. Nellie Bogue Hibbert has demonstrated her dedication to this county through 20 years of service as county clerk. She loves this county and its people, and she cares about its future. Lamoreau said she's "sneaky.'' He's questioned her sincerity and ethics.
Bogue Hibbert is an intelligent, strong-willed woman who will make decisions based on what she believes is in the best interest of Union County citizens.
She understands that Buffalo Peak Golf Course has issues that must be addressed, that it needs a business plan. She understands that economic development and job creation has to be a priority for the county. But at the same time she understands that getting the job done involves more than simply being a dissenting vote, which Lamoreau has stressed ever since he took office.
To his credit, Lamoreau has had some good ideas. He's pursued wind power. He rightfully questioned the operation and finances of the Buffalo Peak Golf Course. He's stood up for the sheriff's office. But because of his style he's alienated more people than he's brought on board. He's created an atmosphere within county government that can only be described as dysfunctional. Bogue Hibbert has the wherewithal to not only pursue good and new ideas, but to bring others along with her, to build consensus rather than enemies.
Politics and government is the art of compromise. It is all about reaching out to build consensus and persuading others to support your cause. Clearly, Lamoreau has the power of ideas. Sadly, he is so insistent on getting the credit — and so distrustful of others — that he lacks credibility with fellow commissioners and other county officials. All of this has made him ineffective as a commissioner. He has become a polarizing figure in county government.
In this primary election campaign, the candidate demonstrating the most honesty, integrity and credibility is Nellie Bogue Hibbert. We strongly recommend her as the best choice for Position 1 on the county commission.
