Think safety first with start of school
Think safety first with start of school
|
Starting this week caring teachers will once again try to unlock the talents of multitudes of students in public schools in Union and Wallowa counties. The first step toward a quality education is getting to and from school safely. And that effort involves children and adults alike. Parents need to go over a few simple rules with their children, whether the students ride the bus, walk, bicycle, skateboard or drive to school. Students who ride the bus should wait for it in a safe place and only board when the driver gives the signal. When students get off the bus at the end of the school day, they should take 10 giant steps away from the bus before the bus takes off for its next stop. Remember, most drivers are courteous and follow the rules. But a few don't always follow bus safety rules and they jeopardize overall safety. Students who walk to school should remember to mind traffic signals and crossing guards. It's always a good idea to wear reflective material and generally think of yourself as invisible to drivers. Those who ride or drive to school should always wear seat belts, as the law dictates. People are four times more likely to be seriously injured or killed if they are ejected from their vehicle in a crash. Younger kids are required to be in safety seats. Not enough time, some parents and kids say. Well, start earlier. Get up earlier. It's a good lesson in life on the importance of preparation and the proper execution of timing. If we all think safety first this school year, from the oldest driver down to the brand new kindergartener, the students will be prepared when the teachable moment arrives, to learn and grow. Together, we can have a safe, productive school year building good citizens both inside and outside the classroom. |
