Help ‘Paint the Town’

First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in La Grande is celebrating 10 years of doing the mission project “Paint the Town.”

The idea came from watching news coverage of Paint the Town projects happening in bigger cities. We believed there would be those in La Grande who could use a helping hand in getting their homes painted.

Pastor Mark Schlessman was instrumental in getting the program started. First Christian Church in La Grande has painted nine homes (tackling two places one summer), and three years ago, the church painted the J-House.

Paint, supplies and labor are provided by the church. Sometimes members of the family living in the home are able to help with the painting. The church has also had supplies donated by local businesses throughout the years.

We spend a Friday doing prep work on the home, tying back bushes, cleaning the walls off, scraping as needed and sometimes spraying for yellow jackets. On Saturday morning, we get started with taping windows and painting, staying until the job is completed.

The church has enjoyed the camaraderie, as we work together, and getting acquainted with the homeowners. We have met some really nice people and were happy we had the opportunity to serve them.

Qualifying homes must be occupied by the owner and that owner must be physically or financially unable to paint the house and have no resources to get the job done. The house must be in La Grande or Island City. Applicants’ homes are looked at and the home that appears to have the most need of care is chosen. Homeowners don’t have to be members of First Christian Church.

A home has already been selected this summer. The painting date has not yet been set, but should take place in July.

This year, we are inviting the community to get involved. Please join us for a pancake breakfast fundraiser from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, 901 Penn Ave. Enjoy scrambled eggs, sausages, beverages and all-you-can-eat pancakes. The cost is $5. Children 10 and younger pay $3.

We would also like to invite those who are interested to join us at work on the project. You can sign up at the breakfast or call the church office at 541-963-2623.
