Home sweet home: Habitat seeks applicants for next house, donations
Grande Ronde Valley Habitat for Humanity Inc. is seeking applications from families that wish to build a home in Elgin.
If your present living arrangements are inadequate and your family income is below the mean for Union County, you may be selected to partner with Habitat to build a home that would carry an interest-free loan. Your family would be expected to commit 500 hours of time toward the build. Your time plus the efforts of many volunteers and donated materials make this an outstanding value for you and the community. Applications may be obtained by calling 541-963-3879. The deadline for applications is Jan. 15.This will be our seventh home and we are excited to get started. Thanks to the generous donation of a building site by the Linda and Martin Birnbaum family and our many volunteers, we are able to make this home available at a real affordable cost.
As we come into the season of giving, Habitat would ask that you consider seriously your gifts and remember that we invest locally in the lives of our community members. Home ownership is one of the most important investments that we make. We always need volunteers to paint, nail, prepare food, answer phones, use a computer or volunteer at our ReStore … the list goes on and on. Your gifts of time and talent are always appreciated.
You might talk with your civic group or Sunday school class about sponsoring a home. If you can’t do a home consider a room, a door or a window. We also can use financial gifts. Right now, we are launching Project Build It! and we are looking for 400 individuals and/or businesses to partner with us by donating $150 to help build our next Habitat home. Donations can be dropped off at any Sterling Bank branch or can be mailed directly to GRHfH Inc at P.O. Box 111, La Grande 97850. For more information call 541-963-4794 or 541-910-7123.
With the holiday season coming on, you are going to have to deal with all of that stuff that comes with it. So think of the Habitat ReStore and donate items that will otherwise just take up space in your garage or basement. You know, that old couch or table, kitchen appliances or building materials. Or, think of us for that last-minute Christmas gift item.
Our ReStore hours are now from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The phone number is 541-963-2414.
