When was Cove school constructed?

The brick structure, now Cove Elementary School, was completed in the summer of 1934. The building, at the time, served as the Cove School District’s high school and elementary classroom building.

It contained four standard classrooms, a study hall, a science lab and home economics and sewing rooms when it opened.

“It ranks as one of the finest school structures of its size in Eastern Oregon,” The Observer reported in its Aug. 12, 1935, edition.

The building was constructed with the aid of a Public Works Administration loan and grant. The PWA was a large-scale federal government public works construction agency. It was created by the National Industrial Recovery Act in 1933 in response to the Great Depression, according the George Washington University website, www.gwu.edu.

The PWA built large-scale public works projects including schools, dams, bridges and hospitals.

When did the Palmer Junction area north of Elgin receive phone service?

Homes in the Palmer Junction area began receiving telephone service in 1973. The service become available after the General Telephone Company extended its line from Elgin, according to a special Observer edition titled “Northeast Oregon 1973.”

Palmer Junction area residents, who said they welcomed the phone service at the time, included Judy Moe. She had moved to the Palmer Junction area, which is at least six miles north of Elgin, from Beaverton about a year earlier.

“I got along without (phone service), and I didn’t miss it a bit, but now that I’ve got it I wonder how I ever got along without it,” Moe said in 1973.

Did Eastern Oregon University’s wrestling team once host a dual match against the defending NCAA champion?

Yes.

Eastern Oregon University took on Iowa State University at Quinn Coliseum on Jan. 3, 1973. Iowa State was the defending NCAA champion, having won the 1972 title about nine months earlier.

Iowa State won the match 49-0 but Eastern’s wrestlers in at least once sense more than held their own. The Cyclones won just two of their eight matches via pins.

“We would have liked to have done better. But I think we fought well. Nobody gave up,’’ said the late Erling Odegaard, EOU’s wrestling coach at the time.

Almost four years earlier, Odegaard had directed Eastern to an upset of NCAA foe Washington State University at Quinn Coliseum. Eastern knocked off the Cougars 25-10 on Jan. 20, 1968.

Eastern’s wrestling program was discontinued more than 30 years ago.

What was the old Victory Horse Show?

The Victory Horse Show was an event conducted in La Grande in June 1942. The Victory Horse Show was conducted to make up for the cancellation of the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show in Union because of the outbreak of World War II.

The attendance for the single-day show was not listed but was described as enormous in a Oct. 1, 1942, edition of The Observer.

“One of the largest crowds ever to be at single day show was on hand that Sunday for the ‘Victory Horse Show,’” The Observer reported.
