Walden shoots blanks on health care

To the Editor:

In response to Rep. Greg Walden’s take on “Obamacare,” I am skeptical of his attempt to convince his constituents that the Affordable Health Care Plan will be detrimental to the country. First of all, his constituents should be advising him on the need to have health care for all Americans — unless we are too selfish to believe that is true.

Secondly, we all know that the goal of Mr. Walden’s political party is to prohibit anything positive to occur during a Democratic Party administration. Their lawmaking activities consist of thwarting anything proposed by this administration regardless of the benefit to the whole citizenry of the United States.

And my third objection to Walden’s stance on health care for all is that he is making up scenarios of doom regarding damages he thinks could occur from providing health care for all without really knowing whether his scenarios are true. In my book, he should be studying ways to make sure that everyone does have health care, rather than denigrate a program that could lead to far more healthy Americans.

As a matter of fact, the reason Mr. Walden can say that 30 million people will not have health care under “Obamacare” is that a number of Republican state legislatures have said they will not allow the program in their state. I suspect the citizens of those states may take notice.

Some positive things about “Obamacare” include: (1) No one can be excluded based on pre-existing conditions; (2) Healthy people as well as sick people are required to participate so that the cost of health care should become affordable for everyone; (3) Subsidies for those in the lower incomes allow them affordable health care.

I am convinced that most Americans believe that everyone should have affordable health care. So, if “Obamacare” needs changes to make it serve the country, our legislators ought to be capable of making those changes. If they cannot make the improvements, we need new legislators.

Track coaches have positive influence

To the Editor:

I would like to take a moment to thank our track and field coaches. Eastern Oregon was well represented at state this year by all of our schools.

I would like to especially thank Coaches Blackburn and Sheehy from Union. They did such a wonderful job of encouraging our athletes to be the best they could be. It was never about “You have to win!” It was always about finding the strength and courage in yourself.

Union sent 10 athletes to state. All 10 came home with medals. Five won two and Trevor came home with four, but the other four also got medals in their events. That’s 18 medals in the eight events they participated in. A very good day.

I would also like to congratulate Coach Sheehy for receiving coach of the year for cross country. Union won the state competition in 1A, 2A and 3A for both boys and girls this school year.

In a world that seems to be spiraling downward, these young people give us great hope for the future. Thank you, coaches, for your positive influence.
