Letters and Comments for April 21, 2009 Nothing to apologize for To the Editor: It’s frustrating and confusing to have our president “apologizing” for this, the greatest, and most powerful nation in the world. Is he really representing the average American? We have nothing to apologize for. If it weren’t for America, a lot of countries would not be free today. America is also the greatest benefactor in the world. The people of this country are, for the most part, caring and exceptionally generous. Against all the negative and blatant anti-Americanism that already exists, the president seems to be cuddling up to the dictators who hate us and always will. Is he so naive as to think they will love us and change their attitudes? Good examples are the leader of Iran and the hateful Chavez of Venezuela. Recently a glimmer of hope appeared on the horizon. The horizon was off the coast of Mogadishu and the saga of the piracy of the Maersk Alabama. The crew was able to discourage the pirates from taking over the ship due to their courageous captain offering himself in their place. Capt. Richard Phillips is a hero. I felt a nice warm and fuzzy sense of pride, in our country and our military. Canada, under NATO auspices, just captured a bunch of pirates and let them go. What an excuse they gave — there were no laws in effect to prosecute them. Why did they not keep them for intelligence value? Another option would’ve been to blow them out of the water. Thank God for the Navy Seals under the leadership of Capt. Castellano of the USS Bainbridge. Three bangs, you’re out. What excellent marksmanship. We should all be very proud of our assault troops. There’s no need to apologize to anyone. Countries that mess with the U.S. should take a hard look at our emblematic symbol, directly into the eyes of the American eagle and tremble with fear and back off. I’m, of course, grateful to the president for issuing the order that enabled the takedown. Stormy Burns Joseph |
