Letters and Comments for August 11, 2009 Other streets are higher priority To the Editor: In reading Mr. Pokorney’s letter, and as a property owner and taxpayer, I submit the following opinion. Mr. Pokorney, a former councilman, is surely in a position to know what he is talking about and I applaud him for his comments. Chestnut is one of the least traveled streets in the city and surely would not warrant resurfacing as a priority. The mayor needs to take a drive down Jefferson Avenue if she needs something to resurface. This street is a disgrace to downtown La Grande and as we all know, it’s not the only heavily traveled street that is in bad need of repair. There are several. I’m sure most taxpayers would agree that the city budget is tight enough without spending money on a project that does not warrant funding. Do we still have a city manager, or does he not have a say in matters such as this? Dave Lester La Grande Dogs can be dogs in Enterprise To the Editor: All dog owners in the city of Enterprise need to log on to www.enterpriseoregon.org and read the municipal codes regarding dogs within the city. They are quite different than what is being presented to you in harassing letters and verbal warnings. I visited with the chief of police regarding enforcement of the codes and he told me that you can’t stop dogs from being dogs. Summer is passing quickly, so all dog owners, it is time to let your dogs out in their yards to run and play and bark in fun. Let them run the fence lines and greet all the passersby in the street. Let them have short conversations with their four-legged friends across the fence or across the street. Let them welcome visitors to your home. Let them notify you when unfamiliar people or vehicles are in your neighborhood. And let them warn of potential dangers to you and your property. This is what dogs do and are allowed to do in the city of Enterprise. If you are in violation of the codes and a legitimate complaint regarding you and your dog(s) is filed, it will be addressed by an officer of the law — not the neighborhood busybody.
