Letters and Comments for July 28, 2009 Time to repower America To the Editor: When I think about my grandchildren Max and Fiona I wonder what kind of world climate I will be leaving for them and for all of the world’s children and grandchildren. Our economy is struggling and we need jobs. Transitioning to a clean energy economy will put us back to work and set America on the path to economic recovery. It will also help slow the climate change which results from global warming. We need to invest in renewable energy sources and energy efficiency to get the U.S. economy moving forward again. We need to repower America. We need a clean energy economy that will create millions of jobs — jobs that use the skills of today’s workers and can’t be outsourced. Repowering America with a clean energy economy will create jobs for some of our most struggling industries: manufacturing jobs for workers who build wind turbines and solar panels; construction and retrofitting jobs for workers who will make our homes and buildings more energy efficient; and auto industry jobs making plug-in hybrid and electric cars. Most important, repowering America will slow the increase in global warming and provide a liveable world for our children and grandchildren. William Whitaker La Grande Salmon entrails poison dogs To the Editor: Were you successful fishing for spring chinook salmon in the Imnaha river recently? What did you do with the head and entrails after cleaning your fish? Did you by chance dump them at one of the “convenient” pull-outs going up Sheep Creek hill about seven miles east of Joseph? You need to know that dogs eating the entrails can get salmon poisoning with potentially fatal results. It cost me $337.55 to save the life of our 21-month-old 90-pound dog, Joey. I hope that you will reconsider properly disposing of your fish cleanings in a dog-proof container from now on. If your conscience gets the better of you, I’d be glad to accept any donation you might feel compelled to contribute. Double Arrow Vet Clinic and Lin-Lee Kennel provided life-saving care for Joey. By the way sportspersons, dumping your fishing and hunting remains at Sheep Creek Hill puts that stuff right in my back yard. Please reconsider your illegal actions! David Martin Joseph |
