Stand when flag passes by To the Editor: I would like to take a moment to express my extreme sorrow for the way the American flag and combat veterans were treated in the North Powder Huckleberry Parade. Common courtesy demands that you stand if you are physically able and you remove your hat and you place your right hand over your heart when the American flag is paraded past you. The Veterans of Foreign Wars was at the head of the parade as the Color Guard and almost no one stood or bothered to remove their hats. This was very disgraceful and the people of North Powder should be ashamed of themselves. Also, a little applause for what these veterans have done and been through wouldn’t hurt. I would only hope that a public apology, in this newspaper, would be made to the brave veterans who fought and defended this country so that we could all be free. Next time, stand and remove your hat! Bob Levesque La Grande
To the Editor: On Saturday I went with my neighbor Sharon to watch the Huckleberry Festival Parade. When the parade started, the VFW Color Guard stopped under the flag at our post office. It was announced that Nancy Free-Klein would sing the National Anthem. Sharon and I were standing just across the street from the Color Guard along with a few friends. When Nancy started to sing, I looked around and people to our left were still sitting. It wasn’t just young ones. There were older people there too who knew better. I turned toward them and in a loud voice I said, “Stand up!” They did, but I couldn’t believe how disrespectful these people were being to our flag. I really felt that I would not see that kind of attitude toward our flag in this area. I’ve enjoyed living in this area for many reasons, but the main reason was that I felt people here still respected our flag, honored our vets and our troops. Only to find that is not so. I have two children in the military, one overseas. To say I was upset is putting it mildly. The flag represents everything we have. Even though the politicians and brain-dead idiots are trying to take our rights away. It is because of God, Guts and Guns we have the freedom to do almost anything we want. “They’re” trying to take that away from us, and if we don’t get off our “dupas,” it will happen. To the Editor: I want to express my apreciation to all the waiters and waitresses in Union and Baker counties who volunteered their tips on July 23 to the Sam Werner Fund. I am proud to announce that so far, Mamacita’s International Grill, Ten Depot Restaurant, Bill’s Quick Mart, Bud Jacksons, Cinco De Mayo, Sumpter Junction Railroad in Baker City, Benchwarmers and the Long Branch have raised $2,685.85 and money is still being counted! This worthwhile endeavor will go to assist the Werner family with expenses as Sam continues to keep up the good fight against leukemia. There are many fundraisers that continue to go on in this community for the Werners. Please call me at 541-786-1613 or J.T. at Pacific Empire Radio at 541-963-4121 to learn how you can help. Again, thanks to all the servers who participated and restaurant-goers who opened up their wallets. It is much appreciated. Christy Barber La Grande |
