Letters and Comments for March 9, 2010 In the eye of beholder
I’m in Corvallis now, where the local paper covered the resistance to a wind farm in Union, but I spent my junior high through three years of college in La Grande, and I really can’t understand what the people in Union, or anywhere, for that matter, have against wind turbines. While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, to me, the hillsides over Union are hardly scenic and I rather like watching wind turbines and their graceful sweeps through the air. As for noise, anyone who thinks wind turbines are noisy hasn’t been near one. You can stop at a viewpoint just west of Arlingon on I-84 and get a closeup view of one just across the freeway. Wait for a gap in traffic, and you still can’t hear a thing. The only thing I can figure is that “it’s a change and change is bad,” but we can’t continue doing business as usual —- that would be far worse! Alan Batie Corvallis
