Letters and Comments for May 19, 2009 Tribute to custodian To the Editor: I want to take a moment of your time to express my gratitude and delight to have had the opportunity to work with Debbie Murchison. Debbie served as custodian of Cove School for 29 years. Let me tell you a little about Deb’s impact on Cove School. To show our respect for her, the students decided to clean the school on her last day — their gift to her. After track practice, not a handful of students but 40-plus students, cleaned the entire high school for her. They looked like worker ants — you might see one student with spray cleaner followed by two with rags. On their own they washed walls and windows, vacuumed rugs, mopped floors and more. After they had finished, one student looked down and noticed footprints where he had just mopped. He couldn’t believe it! What did he do? He got the mop out again and re-mopped those tracks. Why? Because the students of Cove School know that Debbie would do nothing less and so they have learned from her example. In the afternoon, every child in the elementary school cleaned their classroom, emptied the garbage and vacuumed rugs. A flotilla of mops, buckets, rags and vacuums were in the hands of grade school students as they cleaned offices, halls and bathrooms. Were they proud of a job well done? Yes, all because of a woman who set a standard and had expectations of each of them. Debbie always went the extra mile, expected things to be done right, cared deeply for kids and instilled a sense of pride in each child at Cove School and in Cove School itself. Thank you, Debbie Murchison and Cove School students. You really are the very best! Pat VanNice Cove
To the Editor: I just received my copy of “Destination NE Oregon” as an insert to tonight’s paper. Congratulations on a very nicely done publication. But, with all the emphasis on outdoor recreational activities in the booklet, it is incomprehensible to me that there is not any mention of the newly acquired Mount Emily Recreation Area.
