Staying connected
With great amusement I read the letter about the horrible effects of television and electrical currents on the population of Wallowa County. I hate to be the one to inform the writer, but, the world is not flat, men really did go to the moon and being photographed won’t take your soul away. While I agree that most Americans would be better off watching less TV and reading more, spending less time using electronic equipment and more time building relationships, the fact is we don’t live in the 1800s anymore. Television, especially in rural communities where there is limited entertainment venue, is a way for people to feel connected to the rest of the world. It is a release from stress, boredom and the monotony of everyday life. As for the sick, it takes their mind off of the pain, suffering and loneliness they may be going through. Insomnia? Well stress, depression and being away from family and friends create the same problems. If television and electrical currents were really that bad for us we would all be dropping dead like flies, not living into our 70s and 80s. It is absurd to tell the people of Wallowa County how much better off they would be without cable service! Bill Morris La Grande
