No jobs, no insurance To the Editor: About a month before retiring, I applied for Social Security and Medicare Part A and B. Was informed I should protect myself with a supplemental plan and did so. In response to a letter claiming our health care was among the worst in the world, I wrote back explaining my experience with American health care. As a result, I received an unsigned letter from La Grande suggesting I was “stupid and uninformed” and “a selfish racist bigot.” The others just assumed I was uninformed and the last writer, Pamela Moore, suggested that people who buy supplemental insurance are the ones who foul up the socialistic system. Last I heard, America was a free nation not under the influence of a Socialist/Marxist regime. I’m not unaware of the uninsured, but I know there is nothing I can do or nothing the letter writers can do about it. Assuming one must have a job to afford insurance, those really concerned with the plight of the uninsured might want to contact the various environmental groups who are responsible for more job loss and businesses going overseas than anyone. Talk to your representative in Washington, D.C., and ask them to kill cap and trade and the global warming scam that will cause thousands more uninsured. Might want to consider our $11 trillion debt that costs $26 billion a month in interest payments. With all our job losses and transfers overseas, where is the money coming from? I think there are a few more than me who are uninformed or just don’t care.
Joseph Win-win for everyone To the Editor: Excited and thankful were the two words that expressed my feelings when I read that the La Grande Middle School netted around $10,000 for the school during the recent magazine drive. The excitement was for LMS and Cook Memorial Library, both of which benefitted. This year, because of budget cuts, the library especially needed help in supplying magazines for its shelves. As a result of the partnership between LMS, the library and the public, 15 magazines will now come to the library and $111.60 was donated to LMS. I appreciate all who purchased subscriptions from students or as a part of the partnership to make this year’s drive a win-win for everyone. Ginny Mammen La Grande |
