Letters and Comments for October 13, 2009 State fails to control predatorsTo the Editor: I would like to thank the OHA for donating $12,000 toward predator control in Oregon. However, I’m afraid the state of Oregon really doesn’t want predator control. It comes down to “listen to what we say, not what we don’t do.” Yes, there is plenty of lip service about controlling coyotes, mountain lions, bears and now wolves. But the bottom line simply doesn’t support that. You see states that are really trying to control predators allow hunting at night when predators are up and out hunting. Oregon, on the other hand, says you can’t hunt at night. You must wait until daylight when the predators are done hunting and gone back to their dens to sleep. Another example is that while you may buy a cat tag good for the year, you may not hunt them for the two months they are breeding. Gosh, that makes sense. Let’s not hunt them when they need to be hunted the most, when you might be able to control their population the best. Or how about this one? You must buy a deer or elk tag to hunt predators during deer or elk season. This is, of course, on top of having to buy a cat tag or a hunting license to begin with. So as you can see, the state really isn’t too interested in doing anything about it. Say! I know how to fix this problem. Let’s hire more biologists and buy more new pickups. That will fix the problem. I mean, it has so far, right? J.R. Kauffman La Grande |
