Letters and Comments for October 22, 2009 Good people To the Editor: “Raining jewelry”: words spoken by local musician Thacher Carter at La Grande Farmers Market this past Saturday. And, that is was. As jewelry designers/vendors, we have had many positive experiences. Shortly before the close of the day, a very strong gust of wind came up and literally blew our jewelry and displays off the table and into surrounding areas. We owe thanks to three thoughtful and helpful young ladies, unknown to us, who witnessed the event and were immediately willing to hold things down, chase the flying articles, gather everything up and hold it for us as we tried to get some order into packing up to go home. This is an example of one more reason to be grateful for where we live, as well as for the helpful people in our lives. Without the help of these people and a good friend named Bob, we could have lost much more than a few pieces of jewelry and business cards. There is always a positive in life, and we have much to be thankful for. Living in La Grande and participating in our local farmers market has given us so much — good music, good fun, smiling faces and people who go out of their way to help each other. Next Saturday is the final day for the market this season. Please join us and the other vendors and wonderful musicians. Not only will you find good local produce, handmade crafts and baked goods, but you will have the opportunity to visit with a lot of the good people who live here too. Sharry Sherman Sara Jane Williamson La Grande Show of school spirit To the Editor: Those in attendance during the La Grande High School boys varsity soccer game on Saturday witnessed a surprising display of school spirit. Toward the end of the first half, we could hear the unmistakable sounds of the La Grande High School Marching Band approaching. Instead of turning onto Second Street in front of the high school, they proceeded down the one-way section of K avenue, stopping right behind visiting Mac-Hi’s goal. They then turned toward the field and played the LHS fight song. With cheers from the spectators, they turned and marched on toward EOU. I would like to thank the LHS Marching Band and Jim Howell for the show of support for their fellow classmates. Deb Christison La Grande |
