Letters and Comments for October 26, 2009 Show more school spirit To the Editor: I had the pleasure the weekend of Oct. 9 to observe a football game between Baker City and a team from Canada. I was pleased to see the support and spirit of the school and community. It took me back to when La Grande encouraged the Tigers. Win or lose, this community had spirit and we supported our teams. In Baker City, the band played music, the cheerleaders cheered and they fired up the crowd by running up and down the bleachers. They had purple and gold face paint on, bulldog paws painted on their faces and they paid attention. It was Support Cancer Awareness Week and the team, coaches and spectators wore pink. Someone from the community owns a cannon that was shot off after every touchdown. That was exciting and brought everyone to their feet. I sat there absorbing this camaraderie, support and spirit. Maybe La Grande can get this spirit and support the sports we fought so hard this summer to keep. Sports are good for the young and keep the older fans active. I believe it is OK to cheer for our kids during these sports events. It lets them know the community supports them, be they high school level or those starting out in middle and grade school. Join me in giving them the encouragement they deserve! Come out to any event and bring your spirit. You can get schedules from the schools, the cost is minimal and you can cheer like you mean it if you choose to. Don’t be offended by those of us who scream our lungs out. That’s how we support our kids. Can we do it? I believe we can and I think the school sports teams need and want our participation. Marie Rogers La Grande |
