No forgiving Polanski To the Editor: Dominating the blogs the past week (but not the antique media, which you are reading now) has been the bizarre spectacle of director Roman Polanski. In a 1977 plea bargain, Polanski admitted to drugging and raping a 13-year-old girl. Suspecting the judge was not going along with the plea agreement, Polanski said adios to the USA and continued his film career in Europe. The Los Angeles County District Attorney is planning to extradite Polanski from Switzerland and finish the legal proceedings against him. Some residents of the alternative universe (Hollywood) have signed a petition demanding the proceedings against Polanski be dropped and/or the Swiss keep him in Europe. Signers of the “Free Polanski” petition include Woody Allen, Monica Bellucci, Martin Scorsese and John Landis. Others wanting Polanski freed include Debra Winger, Harrison Ford and Harvey Weinstein. Names to keep in mind the next time you consider going to a movie or renting a video. Kate Harding writing in Salon pretty much nails it. “Roman Polanski may be a great director, an old man, a husband, a father, a friend to many powerful people and even the target of some questionable legal shenanigans. He may very well be no threat to society at this point. He may even be a good person on balance, whatever that means. But none of that changes the basic, undisputed fact: Roman Polanski raped a child. And rushing past that point to focus on the reasons why we should forgive him, pity him, respect him, admire him, support him, whatever, is absolutely twisted.” Steve Boe La Grande
