Editor’s note: The Observer doesn’t usually print thank-you letters in this column, but due to the special circumstances related to the letter below we are making an exception in this case.
To the Editor: The Family of Shannon McKillop would like to express their gratitude to the following people in this heart-wrenching time: The individuals who found her hand, the Elgin Police Department, Union County Sheriff’s Office, all the volunteers who searched tirelessly in the heat, volunteers who drained the pond, the Union County District Attorney’s Office, the La Grande Police Department, The Observer for getting in the obituary on short notice, the Imbler Market. An extra special thank you to the Oregon State Police detectives who worked the case and were in contact with our family throughout the week. We would like to express to the community and those who have called, brought food and have been supportive in this time a big thank you. Law enforcement worked quickly and efficiently in determining who was responsible and thankfully they apprehended the suspect on Monday. Robert Crader For the family of Shannon McKillop
Chestnut gets special attention To the Editor: I wonder what the citizens of La Grande, who drive on streets full of holes and patches, think of the paving of one block of Chestnut Street in downtown La Grande. That block also happens to be the centerpiece of the mayor’s summer party in August. As one who has served on the La Grande City Council, I do not remember this street being on any priority list for repair. With so many streets in terrible condition, do we really need to put up with our tax dollars being spent for projects for the personal enjoyment and political agenda of the mayor of La Grande?
