Children deserve best
Several years ago, we voted to have the state fund our schools. We figured that they would do just that and we would be done with special levys. The downturn in the economy has brought a shortfall of tax dollar revenues for the state. Our schools across the state have had to make deep cuts because of these shrinking revenues. The state has under-funded our schools for the past two years and has again next year. We now have a decision to make concerning whether or not we want to support a levy to stop the deep cuts to our La Grande schools. Our children deserve the best education we can give them. Our children’s education determines their future and the future of our nation. Our parents and other citizens saw to it that we received a good education. Now, it is our turn as a community to do the same for our children. All I ask you to do is to vote your heart. John Sprenger La Grande School Board member
The recent American Red Cross blood drive was a big success. The goal was 70 units, but 77 units were taken in. There were several first-time donors and I am sure they will be back. We had plenty of snacks and the pizza was good. The workers from Boise say they were happy since blood is in big demand. While walk-ons are appreciated (there were 19 at this blood drive), community members can reserve a spot by calling 541-562-5055. Denny and Colleen Langford Union Community responds
Goodness abounds! We are pleased to report our “Paint the Town” soup and salad fundraiser, held April 10, welcomed in excess of 85 participants from this community and surrounding areas. This will provide (in abundance) paint and supplies to completely paint the home of someone in need in La Grande or Island City. This will be First Christian Church’s 11th home in 11 years. We are so grateful for the support of so many in this community. To nominate someone to get their house painted or to volunteer for the actual painting, call 541-963-2623. The deadline to nominate someone is May 25. Carol Hays La Grande |
