Keeping children safe
April is Child Abuse Awareness month. Healthy Start/Healthy Families is the largest child abuse prevention program in Oregon. Union County Healthy Start is dedicated to encouraging strong healthy families and safe, happy, healthy children. Healthy Start reduces child abuse and neglect by two and a half times. The program improves child health and development and helps to ensure children are safe and ready for school. In 2009, Oregon counted 11,090 victims of child abuse or neglect. Of that total, 90 were Union County children. Over half of the victims were 5 years of age and younger. Union County’s rate of child abuse or neglect is 14.9 per 1,000 children — higher than the state rate of 12.5 per 1,000 children. In Union County, 24 percent of founded abuse/neglect/threat of harm referrals were related to domestic violence and 32 percent were related to substance abuse. To report child abuse or neglect, contact local law enforcement. Child abuse is a tragedy that comes in a variety of forms: physical, mental, sexual and emotional. Child abuse victims in Union County, like everywhere, come from all walks of life. The Blue Monday event runs from 5 to 7 p.m. April 25 at Max Square. A number of entertainment activities will be available for the entire family to enjoy. Sue Arnoldus program manager Union County Healthy Start/Healthy Families Hurrah for Soroptimists
We offer loud applause to the Soroptimist International organization here in La Grande. They serve and support our local community well! During these challenging economic times, the Soroptimists have continued to find ways to support women, children and education in Union County. Good job, Soroptimists! What a great example you set!
