Not pro or con on wolves
A commentary authored by Ramona Phillips of Joseph in The Observer titled “Ranching on the Wolf Highway” requires correction of statements made accusing the “Humane Society” of “hypocrisy” — evidently based on a member’s earlier letters “promoting” the presence of the wolf in Wallowa County. The Wallowa County Humane Society is not affiliated with, nor does it receive any monies from any national humane organization that may be active in promoting wolf re-population or protection in Oregon, or nationally. The WCHS has not, as an organization, expressed or taken any stance pro or con regarding this question. Volunteers of the WCHS, as unique individuals, may participate in any number of political causes outside of their participation in our organization. The WCHS has no legal authority or means to intervene in any animal abuse situation; it must work through the Wallowa County Sheriff’s Office. We offer assistance or advice when requested by the sheriff or the county court. The WCHS exists to promote the humane treatment of domestic animals in our county, as well as helping find solutions for pet owners, feral cats or other problems. Numerous volunteers over the last 30-plus years have donated their time and money in this cause, in addition to helping with neglected or abused animals, including livestock. We thank our volunteers and donors for their generosity and support in our efforts, upon which we depend entirely for our success.
