By now you know that a unique local enterprise will no longer be able to continue in its present form. The Great American Harvest cannot continue without more help. Believe me, it is too valuable an asset to our community to allow this to happen. It was founded on Barbara Harris’ big heart and has been viable only with the help of volunteers and donated time and equipment. Somehow this program has to continue. GAH provides a situation that connects us to the earth; feeds the hungry; gives troubled youth a chance to work and do good; and allows an opportunity for parents to bring their children to see where their food comes from and help harvest and preserve it. This program enriches our community beyond measure and makes our world a better place. It is a win-win situation. I write to friends and relatives around the country about sitting in the sun in the middle of our beautiful valley, delighting in picking peas along with 30 others, including little children. They are amazed that such an opportunity exists. Whatever it takes — someone writing for grant money, the local FFA groups taking this on as a project with the help of our Extension service — Union County must have people who believe in the concept who have the knowhow and ideas to breathe life back into the Great American Harvest. Growing things is a huge part of our valley’s economy. Be a part of it for a few hours and it will change your life. And more importantly, people, realize what an invaluable and wonderful program this is. Help keep it alive. Stephanie Messersmith Cove |
